KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will be getting 15 used-coaches from Japan for use by Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB).
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said the
coaches, which were still in good condition and offered free to
Malaysia, were expected to arrive by June this year.
KTMB had conducted a technical assessment of the coaches in Japan
and found them safe for use here, he told reporters at a programme,
"Borak-Borak and Sarapan Pagi" with occupants of the Pandan Perdana Low
Cost Flats here Sunday.
Ong said the coaches would be refurbished and used for the KTM
Intercity train service.
Early this year, the Transport Ministry cancelled the purchase of
eight used Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) valued at RM64 million from
Spain after the train supplier failed to deliver the units according to
schedule.
The purchase of the DMUs was made to fulfill the pressing need of
KTMB to accommodate the rising number of train passengers which had
increased to 95,000 passengers daily. - BERNAMA
Cool.Cant wait to see them....

KTM Intercity is the company.
Anyway, Intercity got a few types. Express, Mail and Shuttle. To briefly summarise, Express stops at major stations. Mail stops at all stations and halts when needed. Shuttle stops at major and minor stations. Stops varies with each train.
why is it free?

It's under their "Friends of Japan" programme. Indonesia's KRL Jabotabek has received many second-hand EMUs and Thailand's SRT has received many blue train coaches from JR. So many was received that SRT has some routes that offer full blue train coach consist.
It's good to hear that Japan will be donating it's used coaches to KTM.
I sincerely hope that KTM would continue to maintain the maintenance standards as the Japanese.
Besides that, I can't wait for the arrival for it :D

They should rename the company as KTM Berhad and remove all the jargon...
Then go into restructuring, use English as the main medium for future expansion. Rename services in English.
KTM InterCity(IC) - Express Cross-Country Trains, stop at big cities only
KTM InterRegio(IR) - Fast Regional(State) Trains, stop at major state towns only
KTM Regio(R) - Slow Regional(State) Trains, stop at every station
KTM NightLiner(NL) - Night trains with couchette/sleeper compartments
Like that can be profitable mah~
hope they sending some AV to sg for free

The whole company is KTM Berhad leh.. KTM Berhad is a semi-govt company..
KTM Intercity(Antarabandar), KTM Komuter and KTM Freight is under the SBU (Strategic Business Unit)
Renaming the trains will cost a bomb then..
But people associate the term "InterCity" as a product ala train type, not a subsidiary of the main company as a whole. The Polish PKP InterCity is also another exception with KTM InterCity in this case. But in the Polish case InterCity is both a product and also the brand.
So an InterCity train of PKP InterCity would be called PKP InterCity InterCity. Other trains are PKP InterCity xxx...
Will KTM go in this direction too?
I doubt so.
Rebranding needs money. They shall just stay with KTM Antarabandar and KTM Komuter. No point for them to rename, unless a miracle happens.
The amount of trains running each day doesn't warrant any classifications, seriously.

Not like in Europe
This was the Blue Train demonstrator which came to Singapore yesterday. The new Blue Train coaches will not enter Singapore as the wood piece on top (representing the AC unit mounted on the Blue Train coach) hit both iron bridges in Singapore.
