Kop chiefs ditched a local firm and put their insurance with AON — the company which pays United £20million a year.
And that means they are now indirectly contributing to the transfer and wages kitty of the team who last season finally pulled clear of Liverpool by winning their 19th English title.
A source said: "It's an incredible thing to do.
"When the Liverpool fans find out, they will be furious that the club is effectively helping United.
"Working with the sponsors of your biggest rivals looks like an own goal."
Clubs take out insurance policies worth millions on stadiums, property and against the possibility of players being seriously injured or having to quit the game.
Liverpool declined to comment.
