Bony lumps..

ok maybe i m paranoid but here goes
i have this bony lump on my back of skull, painless, but when lying on hard surface its abit painfull which is logical la.. also got a minor depression on my skull too and a few small lumps i think..my ribcage also got this bony lump too
my qn is is the skull smooth? is it normal to have protrusions and depressions coming out? -

Did you ever fell head down on a hard surface?
Were you subjected to any childbirth trauma - vacuum extraction or forceps extraction (these information can be obtained from your parents)... -

Only pain upon lying down on a surface yar? -
lump is at back of skull, just above neck...its as hard as a bone..just a bony lump...when i feel it painless, only when my back of my skull lye on hard surface and press against it then there is slight pain.. this is the biggest one..then there is this minor depression on my side of skull where it is quite soft to touch in the depression..other than that other very small lumo wher ei have to press hard on skull then i can feel it..generally my skull isnt smoothOriginally posted by renorenal:The last question depends on how you answer my first question mar... Tell me more about this lump... where is it SPECIFICALLY, how hard is it (is it as hard as your forehead, your nose or your chin, feel yourself and let me know)...

Side of skull means near to your ear? A depression can be quite common and it depends on how fast and slow the skull bone fuses earlier in life, you may not have noticed it when you were younger. -

It's very hard to tell without seeing you personally, and examining you, but how is your vision? Is it blurry (and I am not referring to far or short sightedness)?
A lump that originates from that back can come firstly from the skin, fat cells or the bone itself. Based on your description, I believe it is bony in origin.
Do you noticed any other rubbery lumps on your neck, armpit or groin?
Rapid hair loss may be genetically inherited, however it may be secondary to conditions of taking chemotherapeutic drugs for cancer... -

any surgery/illness yes but not related..thalessmina minor, excema
any other diffculties not really la pccasional stiff neck, tiredness, headaches, eyes sensitivity to sunlight stuff not related rite?
i hope its A bony cyst not many cause i feel quite a num of small lumps coming out...maybe i m paranoid la -

You see, inside the bone is a structure we call the bone marrow, which their main function is to produce and synthesize red blood cells, white blood cells and also platelets. In thalassaemia minor, part of your red blood cells synthesized are abnormal because of some defects in hemoglobin formation. Hence there will be premature death of red blood cells in the circulation (extracted by the spleen).
A normal life span of a red blood cell is up to 120 days (4 months or so), but with your medical condition, it may be around 30-60 days before it gets cleared up, but since your's is minor, the life span may be slightly longer.
Hence your bone marrow will go into action and excessively produce these blood cells to replace what is lost. The only way to do so and mass produce red blood cells is for it to become larger (the bone marrow) hence pushing the bone encovering it to become bigger as well, and because of your skull that is fused, they will tend to have lumps and bumps and lead to irregularity.
This happens more when you reach puberty as this is the phase of rapid growth in sexual development as well as physical growth.
Bones that contain bone marrows and participate mostly in blood cell regeneration and production includes the long bones, particularly the femur, the humerus, the pelvis, the sternum (where your ribs meet in front) and also your skull (which is a membranous bone).

What kind of pain is it? Is it throbbing or sharp?
Prior to developing the headache, is your vision blurry, or do you see zig-zag lines or it becomes dark?
Do you feel better to stay in a room which is dark and silent when you have this headache? Is it also better if you sleep it off, waking up and find that the headache has resolved?
How long does this headache usually last in one attack, in hours?
I am thinking more of migraine, but I need your location of the headache. -

Thalassemia minor may not be a health problem but you still have the trait and your red blood cell may not be in the normal range as other people who do not have these problems.
Normal Hb count in males would be in the range of 14-16 g/dL and in a female would be in between 12-14 g/dL... -
