Epileptic drugs are highly toxic, yes... the blood need to be monitored from time to time as the patient takes the medication to ensure that it does not crossover to the toxic range...Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:All these drug names never hear before. First one if I am not wrong are sleeping pills.
Epileptics patients take poisonous drugs to stop an epileptic fit?
Barbiturate has been widely substituted over by Benzodiazepines which is safer, non-toxic even though in high doses and easily reversible with a drug called Flumazenil.Originally posted by alexkusu:barbiturate...

Yes...many of this class of benzodiazepines have strong amnesic effect, at least on certain people. Midazolam (Dormicum) also has similar effects. It is great for endoscopy cos' the patient is not under GA but does not remember a thing after the procedure. I myself had undergone endoscopy a few times and each time I refused to do it without IV Dormicum. Having seen my patients gag and tear during endoscopy, this is the way to go if you need a scope...Originally posted by alfagal:Rohypnol (flunitrazepam)?
I can't really recall, but do they have anterograde amnesia as a major component compared to retrograde amnesia in this case once they take the medications?Originally posted by oxford mushroom:Yes...many of this class of benzodiazepines have strong amnesic effect, at least on certain people. However, criminals have used these drugs for date rapes. The victim is semi-conscious and able to mount a response during the rape but after the event cannot remember what had happened and so is useless in court. Some sick people like their victims to be able to struggle etc during the rape.
Hmmm... I see...Originally posted by oxford mushroom:The amnesia is restricted to the period during which the drug was active. No obvious long-term amnesic effect although if I forget things nowadays I can blame it on Dormicum

So its true when pple say if u go under GA too many times it can affect ur memory?Originally posted by oxford mushroom:The amnesia is restricted to the period during which the drug was active. No obvious long-term amnesic effect although if I forget things nowadays I can blame it on Dormicum
It's a minor complication... and yes it can affect one's memory...Originally posted by alfagal:So its true when pple say if u go under GA too many times it can affect ur memory?
I can't answer the first question... but yes, it's called the b.reast reconstruction surgery, where they make full use of silicons. Some older women prefer not to go for that surgery because of the expenses especially after total mastectomy.Originally posted by rainee:By the way, how far can a plastic surgery go? I know it can alter face and stuff like dat, but what about disfigured body? And like if someone has breast cancer and her breast is totally gone from the operation, then can they put it back?
no no, of cos not put back the diseases b reast...yucks...Originally posted by renorenal:I can't answer the first question... but yes, it's called the b.reast reconstruction surgery, where they make full use of silicons. They can't put the diseased b.reast back if that is what you mean...
Originally posted by rainee:Yes it does, but it is called Skin Grafting. For example a person were to lose out a huge chunk of meat due to accident, they will remove some flesh from the back of the shin or the buttocks to replace the missing piece. This can be done by any General Surgeons or Orthopedists...

I am just wondering, cos what if a young lady went for total mastectomy then she recovered...then like half or maybe both of her b reasts are gone...so just wondering if there is a mean to reconstruct it so that she will look normal la...
Does this apply to patients who are disfigured thru other means too? Like those involved in accidents, those who are partially burned in a fire...
But what if the skin grafting leaves scar and the b reast was no longer proportionate after the accident? Can a surgery be used to make it look "normal" again?Originally posted by renorenal:Yes it does, but it is called Skin Grafting. Don't worry about the shin or the buttocks, they will take time to heal after stitching the gap together...
Disfigurement like losing of teeth, dislocated temporomandibular joint (TMJ) broken nose or other facial problems can be put under the care of a Plastic Surgeon...
No no... Breast Reconstruction Surgery (BRS) is different from Split Skin Grafting (SSG).Originally posted by rainee:But what if the skin grafting leaves scar and the b reast was no longer proportionate after the accident? Can a surgery be used to make it look "normal" again?
ic...yea I know it is expensive...I wonder how much that Dawn girl spent on all her surgery series...Originally posted by renorenal:No no... Breast Reconstruction Surgery (BRS) is different from Split Skin Grafting (SSG).
BRS replaces the b.reast with synthetic material while the SSG replaces the gap with skin from another site of the body.
Hence BRS will not leave a scar, it is the scar from the mastectomy that is the problem, but with BRS and careful manipulation and final touch-ups, the shape and its contour can be made to look almost like the other side.
It is purely for cosmetic reason.
With our current technology in reconstructive surgery, anything is possible. Just that it is quite costly.
