When we donate, we donate the whole blood (what the Americans call it packed cells)...Originally posted by coolger03:hmm... not sure if this has been asked b4...
but then when we donate blood platelet to the leukaemia patients, can we donate a lot of times??
hmm... i always thot when we donate to leukemia patients, they usually take the blood from ur back? the spine or something one?Originally posted by renorenal:When we donate, we donate the whole blood (what the Americans call it packed cells)...
We donate once every 6 months to allow the blood cells to recuperate in our body before we can go and donate again...
The blood that we donated will be sent for centrifugation (a device that rotates rapidly and uses centrifugal force to separate substances of different densities) and divided into many other parts based on the components of the blood.
Some may only contain a certain factor (Factor VIII for Hemophilia Type A patients) while some may contain many combined factors (IX, X, XI or XII - cyrosupernatant).
The leukemic patients usually receive whole blood / packed cells.

The initial treatment is by IV fluids 0.9% NaCl solution to the patient, as much as possible because the patient is losing fluid (by losing blood).
Some people may have up to 6 packs of IV fluids transfused per day while the rest who are more severe may go up to 12-15 packs per day (1 pack = 500 mL).
When the condition deteriorates up the point of Dengue Hemorrhagic Syndrome, the best bet is to transfuse platelets (fresh frozen platelets = FFP) because the patient will undergo a complication of blood coagulation disorder which is called Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIVC) whereby the blood will get clot everywhere without any sole purpose because the whole blood coagulation cascade is messed up pretty badly.
The aim is to treat what the patient loses... plasma is a blood substitute free from cells and corpuscles. You can also use that, but is not very important when patient enters the stage of DHF or DSS and develops the complication...Oh.....
That is bone marrow donation from the iliac crest of the pelvis. This is done for a potential cure for the leukemic patient. Bone marrow donation is different from blood donation.Originally posted by coolger03:hmm... i always thot when we donate to leukemia patients, they usually take the blood from ur back? the spine or something one?
Yes, and amongst other functions of transporting nutrition, oxygen, hormones and vital bodily chemicals as well...Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:Oh.....
News report wrongly. No wonder, because I was wondering why. I learn that in school that plasma is an important component of the body. It helps to carry away wastes and some other important functions.
Forgotten liao. Only remember the transportation of waste. All return to teacher liao.Originally posted by renorenal:Yes, and amongst other functions of transporting nutrition, oxygen, hormones and vital bodily chemicals as well...
That is the basic-most of what you need to know in Biology...
Biology is interesting to me, I don't really fancy Chemistry and Physics, though I have to know a little as it applies to Laboratory Investigations and the Principles of Orthopaedics...Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:Forgotten liao. Need to take out Biology textbook and revise........
Chemistry and Biology appeals to me, but Physics is a no-no. I fall asleep practically for during Physics lessons......Originally posted by renorenal:Biology is interesting to me, I don't really fancy Chemistry and Physics, though I have to know a little as it applies to Laboratory Investigations and the Principles of Orthopaedics...

You want to learn more ar? Can... stop studying IT and take up medical course lorOriginally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:Don't want. I want to learn more.

LOL, cannot switch course. Deadline to switch course is June 2005, long after I got to learn sgforums. Besides, my grades are not good enough to make it for the medical course.Originally posted by renorenal:You want to learn more ar? Can... stop studying IT and take up medical course lor
Just kidding lar... dun angry hor...
Like my prof used to say... you don't need anything to study medicine... everything you need to learn you will learn it again in foundational course (1st year of medicine)... you need LOGIC to study it...Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:LOL, cannot switch course. Maybe will study it at university, but with only secondary school's biology, it is going to be hard.....
Sure or not? I see the universities medicine courses all got requirements, which I did not study.Originally posted by renorenal:Like my prof used to say... you don't need anything to study medicine... everything you need to learn you will learn it again in foundational course (1st year of medicine)... you need LOGIC to study it...
The only tough time in medicine is trying to get into it... after that, everything requires logical thinking... if you don't believe me, ask any doctorsOriginally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:Sure or not? I see the universities medicine courses all got requirements, which I did not study.
I don't see how logic can help us to study it. Like that will kill people because we use assumptions. You say cannot assume unless necessary........
Get into it? You mean getting into the course? Or is it trying to understand concepts?Originally posted by renorenal:The only tough time in medicine is trying to get into it... after that, everything requires logical thinking... if you don't believe me, ask any doctors
Logic is not assumption wat... logic means you know what will happen when you do something, assumption is you donno whether can or not, but you think can so just do it...
Getting into the course...Originally posted by ndmmxiaomayi:Get into it? You mean getting into the course? Or is it trying to understand concepts?
What do you mean by 'not good intestine'?Originally posted by gorby107:Hello ask another question
