Deep plot that lets audience think into it. Must have a major arc storyline that encompass some side-stories (Check out Chrno Crusade, FMA)
No dragging/lengthening of story. (Titles like Dragonball drags on alot = =)

Need not to be an action anime. (Air is one good example :3 ) -
for me all 3.
but then again, some animes i watch don't really have that much action and its still nice. -
oh i was refering to another post by an otaku. who said that u're not a real anime fan if you only watch naruto and bleach. smth like that.
so i was just curious, cuz he recommended some anime, so was wondering why he said they are good.
so i ask myself: what is a good anime..?

don't forget the ending, the voice actors/actresses(the voice justifies alot on the character)
and of course, the characters.
well endowed characters, good looking characters is what get the otakus pouring in.

the best example is The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, it was a simple anime with simple storyline (a bit weird one too), short only 14 episodes but surprisingly the response was overwhelming. not only was it was voted the best anime in the Tokyo Anime Awards 2006, the amount of fanbase the series has generated was huge! -

Animes with the biggest fanbase now is bleach and naruto.
But i dont think bleach and naruto are good series.
And most people that are watching them are just free loaders.
Meaning they just dl it for free everyweek.
And they dont buy any bleach naruto merchandise.
And alot of naruto merchandise you see in CC. Like headbands,rings,necklace all these. All made from taiwan or china fake one. They do not give credit to the original production company.
And i dont think much are buying naruto and bleach vcds.
They just happy happy dl everyweek.
The only thing these shounens are earning well from is through their manga.
IMO LA. I NOT SURE HOW MUCH THEY EARN ACTUALLY.
But look at melancholy of suzumiya haruhi.
A simple 14 episode anime.
This anime is one of those with the biggest fanbase too.
Mayb top 5 in the world.
But the fanbase definately no fight with bleach and naruto la.
But many of those that watch this series are real hardcore fans.
Meaning alot of them will chiong buy merchandise from this series.
Just look at the number of figurines,CDs,Magazines that have been generated from this series.
For figurines. The Freeing 1/4 series all kana sold out in one week. And Kyon no imoto 4hour let people snatch finish liao.
The maxfactory figurine now haruhi 4th batch liao. Mikuru and yuki also sold out.
The WF nendroid is selling for $200 in sg. Yet people are snatching over it.
The jigsaw puzzle selling at KKnM sold out within a week. And they dont allow preorder simply because this series merchandise too many people snatch.
The haruhi clocks are priced at $150(including import fee). Just a simple clock but people are still importing it to sg. And now i think also sold out liao.
The CD that hirano aya sing consisting of godknows,lostmymusic,harehare,bokendeshodesho. Also sold out in japan.
And because of this series, hirano aya is famous like dunnoe what now. Last month she also just release her photoalbum. In one month time she would be releasing a dairy kind of thing.
And as for mags. You have no idea how many mags are featuring on this.
Their anime CDs/DVDs also sell like siao ...
All these compared to bleach and naruto. You think which one earn more?
Ya, Bleach and naruto mayb more people watch.
But all those watching are just freeloaders.
And if you really ask someone that have watched like 70+~100+ series.
You ask them see if they think bleach + naruto are good series.
They are just shounens that are aimed at fanboys.

i'll say those non draggy with no fillers animes are the best. i really can't stand animes that are too draggy like naruto, 1 fight scene can drag until many episodes.
lousy fillers are also 1 of the things that kills the series, remember that 1 year worth of crappy naruto fillers and that bounto fillers of bleach?
that is why i prefer short animes, those 20+ episodes type, like claymore, but too it's coming to an end.
