Ingredients
225g/8oz plain chocolate, chopped
75g/3oz butter, chopped
4 eggs
350g/12oz caster sugar
115g/4oz plain flour
pinch of salt
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp vanilla essence
115g/4oz walnuts, chopped
For the plain batter
50g 4 tbsp butter
175g/6oz cream cheese
115g/4oz caster sugar
2 eggs
30ml/2 tbsp plain flour
1 tsp vanilla essence
How To
Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.
Line a 13 x 9 inch tin with greaseproof paper and grease the paper.
Melt the chocolate and butter in a saucepan over a very low heat.
Meanwhile, beat the eggs until light and fluffy. Gradually add the sugar and continue beating until blended. Sift over the folour, salt and baking powder and fold in.
Stir in the cooled chocolate mixture and the vanilla essence and walnuts. Set aside 2 cups of the chocolate batter.
To make the plain batter, cream the butter and cream cheese with an electric mixer.
Add the sugar and continue beating until blended. Beat in the eggs, flour and vanilla essence.
Spread the unmeasured chocolate batter into the tin. Pour over the cream cheese mixture.
Drop spoonfuls of the reserved chocolate batter on top.
With a metal spatula, swirl the mixtures to marble. Do not blend completely.
Bake for about 40 minutes or until just set. Unmould when cool and cut into squares for serving.
