because ..... the scrawny little farker had a bigger sized back up behind him. Also, you'll feel bad about hitting someone smaller than you ... even in self defense .....
I remember the psychology of little runts like him described in of mice and men .... if a smaller guy whacks down a much bigger guy, he think he'd gain more respect, but he knows too that much bigger guys are a bit afraid of hitting smaller guys, cos he'd be branded the bully, even if he's really the victim .... like in this case .....so they know they can go around picking on people with more impunity than others.
that's why many small guys are either angry, grouchy people, or what we'd call "hu jia hu wei" .... a fox walking in front of a tiger ....
