  I don't recommend any dslr unless you're going to go deeper into this as a hobby.

  Compact cams did most of the work for me better then the prof like dslr in the past. But I liked the flexibility of adjusting the depth and blurring the unnecessary thru manipulation of the lenses.
  
  Compact cams cant do that.

  You don't need DSLR to get manual functions. Fuji has a rather new model (er, forgot the model no.) that has like 10x or 12x zoom, and allows one to play in manual mode...and it costs only S$350 or less.

  I just need one to take pics of events. New job scope for the new year. So I might as well get prepared.
