apples n pearsOriginally posted by honeymouse:What fruits are they?
May be they are just not fully ripen yet. All these fruits you mentioned are imported from other countries and to maintain their freshness and quality, they are picked and packed before they are ripen.Originally posted by shinta:apples n pears
hmm and honey dew n rock melon too...
Coz they are his technicians and SO is generous so he tends to buy the beer as a treatOriginally posted by choco B:Those guys should BYOB sometimes

Try buying the fruits from other fruiterers and hopefully will have a better quality and yummy fruits since it will be from different supplier.
I can understand your frustration.Originally posted by shinta:i bought them from cold storage
they're either so ripe they're about to rot.. (ntuc) or they're... so.. not ripe..
=(Originally posted by honeymouse:I can understand your frustration.
The best thing is to eat the fruits you know are in season. Unfortunately it's hard to tell in Singapore as it depends if the fruits are from USA or Australia.
I have been buying nectarines and mangoes because they are in season here in Oz. Even so, they are not fully ripen so to enjoy the full flavour of it, I usually just leave it out (it's been quite hot here) of the fridge for a day or two for them to ripen. I love the nice "aromas" of the mangoes and they are really yummy too when they are fully ripen!!! I have got 2 at home waiting to be eaten
I love durians too. If you can't bring it home to eat, just eat it at the durian stall .Originally posted by shinta:=(
i love mangoes n durians... but nel say strictly no durians at home...
mangoes are not that bad.. but i have to make sure there's no mango-ish smell on my hands or breath
my jaw's back to normal now...Originally posted by honeymouse:I love durians too. If you can't bring it home to eat, just eat it at the durian stall .
We can't get the durians you get in Singapore and Malaysia here but only the frozen durians from Thailand.
Mangoish smell? You must be thinking of a specific species of the mangoes... "gui ni" is what my mum called it. They have a strong smell and flavour. I am not that keen on that particular one.
How's your jaw now? Thought you were going to the doctor?
Good to know you're feeling better now.Originally posted by shinta:my jaw's back to normal now...
the pain in the ear subsided too..
shytz... there goes my mc
any mangoes fit into the category... he just dun like the smell..
can't eat durians at stall too... the smell will linger for days.. unless i dun speak to him for days.. and dun get close enuff at all..

I used to keep track but as time goes by, it gets more difficult, as each one of us would pay for different things now (no common pool of funds). Initially, I think we would spend around $35/week on food groceries and dinners outside (excluding lunch at work and household items). Would that be too much or too little?Originally posted by elindra:Just wondering how much do you guys spend on your grocery bills a month and how big is your family and do you guys eat often at home? This includes stuff like tissue and toliet paper etc
I think for 2 people our grocery bills are pretty when we don't really cook at home and eat out 90% of the time.
SO was complaining that he estimates the grocery bill for us in a year is about $4,000
I think it's rather cheap to eat out (the hawker centre) in Singapore as compared to us in Oz. We need to spend at least $10 here for lunch and at least $20 for dinner per person.Originally posted by av98m:Actually grocery bills is not so bad...I find that eating out is the real killer -_-!!

they just dun taste the same way.... now n 10 years ago..
I think it depends on where you eat and the QTY you eat.Originally posted by av98m:Actually grocery bills is not so bad...I find that eating out is the real killer -_-!!
Hawker centre is relatively cheap....but I usually end up eating elsewhereOriginally posted by honeymouse:I think it's rather cheap to eat out (the hawker centre) in Singapore as compared to us in Oz. We need to spend at least $10 here for lunch and at least $20 for dinner per person.
As for health wise though, I don't think it's healthy to eat out in Singapore all the time as some hawkers keep reusing their cooking oil and the food can be quite high in cholesterol.

One thing I find annoying when I was in Singapore is that the restaurants don't display the actual cost of the food, it's always with the ++ at the end. I find it rather deceiving as they try to make it look like it's a good deal but by the time you add up the taxes and service charge it's no longer a good deal. Also, you can't estimate how much cash you need to have if you are planning to pay by cash .Originally posted by av98m:Hawker centre is relatively cheap....but I usually end up eating elsewhere
actually i find a lot of guys like to do the : this round u buy, next round i buy.Originally posted by choco B:Those guys should BYOB sometimes
Well you guys cook more often than we doOriginally posted by the_don:grocery bills
staying with parents : $80 per month for 2pple (cook once a week, inclusive of toiletries. does not include electricity)
not staying with parents : $500 per month for 2 pple. (cook most weekday dinners & weekend lunchs, inclusive of toiletries, cleaning equipment, kitchen towels, fish tank cleaning, etc. does not include electricity)
erhm TX and I tend to buy the "better" and/or "exotic" stuff so our groceries bill is quite high.
