Their annual report is on the SGX website, according to dad.Originally posted by Redblood:since its public transport ...
should not the public know what goes on with the high turn over of the various transport companies in question?
their turnover nett profit are in the tune of millions per year?
public housing is under fire about the high prices and lack of transparency, time for public services to COME CLEAN?
in oz, it may be true their public transport sucks, but the price of cars sure beats us many times over.Originally posted by SydneyLibrarian:Ok... I haven't been living in Singapore for the past 2 yrs to take the public transport that regularly, but what I can say is...
in every country & city, no matter where, you will still find people complaining about their public transport system.
When I was in Singapore, I'd complain about the buses & MRT - not efficient enough, too many people on board, too expensive, yada-yada-yada
When I came over to Australia, my oh my, the horrors of the public transport system over here in Sydney! Peak hour trains come every 20 mins, off peak period trains can take up to an hour to arrive. Added to that, the trains are really old (and I mean, like 20 y.o. for some of them!), non-air conditioned for some of them, and soooo crowded. And the expense! Wahh... costs me A$36 per week just to travel from my place to city & back! Buses can be even more expensive
Eh... so the point I'm trying to make is, that you have to experience life in a different city to know that Sg public transport system & its costs aren't really that bad lah.. to me, anyway.
Their GST is not where as low as usOriginally posted by Redblood:in oz, it may be true their public transport sucks, but the price of cars sure beats us many times over.
i have been to european countries, sure public transport fares are in the range of 3-8 euros, but their plus are cars, you could get a 2nd hand car for as low as S$10-15k. fuel prices are of cos killer euros. road tax and other vehicle taxes are similar to us. majority or rather all of the frens i know in europe drive cars big or small. one of them is a car mechanic, he even rebuild an AUDI for less than S$15k to put on the road legally.
so how much did they make? ...Originally posted by Kuali Baba:Their annual report is on the SGX website, according to dad.
Do you know SBS has capped all fares for trunk and feeder svs to $1.90?Originally posted by Redblood:so how much did they make? ...
SMRT made 103.6m profit after tax
SBStransit made 51.5m profit after tax
according to the SBS report, maintenance and staff expenditure has declined. fuel expenditure increased. SMRT did not explain details as SBS did.
with the above in mind, if the companies threw all the profit into transportation improvements, are they what the public really wanted? however due to the large number of shareholders, will the shareholders agree to the public's view. no more profit for shareholders = no more shareholders.
what i want is lower public transport fares, improved commuter ease of use (not the current stupid card). improved maintenance of the fleet especially cleanliness. due to imcreased fuel prices, i wonder who the fuk approved buses with such high fuel comsumption
SBS buses damn dirty lor...I think they only sweep at the start of shift and end of shift...and maybe even end of shift one also dun have...Originally posted by Rhonda:Do you think this will happen? What are your thoughts on this issue? What improvements do you think ought to be made to our current public transport system? Are you happy with the current level of service?
$1.90 cap is meaningless to me ......Originally posted by sbst275:Do you know SBS has capped all fares for trunk and feeder svs to $1.90?
Originally posted by Rhonda:Thank goodness I don't take the MRT often, because I feel that the waiting time for the train during off-peak periods are now longer than it used to be.
Not just that, the MRT is also often crowded these days, even during off-peak hours.
I guess the situation might be improved with a higher frequency of train arrivals in the stations. However, I guess it's part of their cost-cutting measures to prolong the interval period between trains.
I've also noticed that during off-peak hours, the waiting time for buses has gone up too. Worse, for some bus services, the waiting time can be long even during peak hours!
If we're going to have fare hikes imposed on us, they'd jolly well look into improving the services provided to justify the hike!
That's why I'm looking for accommodations that are within walking distance to my workplace!Originally posted by the Bear:with this, i think you will be in for a rude awakening when you go to melbourne...
Aiyah, SMRT dun wanna implement the fare cap so what you do?Originally posted by InnoHippo:$1.90 cap is meaningless to me ......
i need to do a bus-mrt-bus switch for work ......
why cant they cap my total end-to-end fare to $1.90

Some I can't blame like buses passing by construction site like at PLAB, Airport Rd making the bus dirty
When I was much younger, me and my buddies actually cooked on the top deck of double decker buses before, during long journeys. No I am not kidding. Jaw stove, solid fuel tablet, and mess tin.Originally posted by Rhonda:.
I have tao jiak on SBS buses before. I eat bao on my way to morning shift because the shift starts at 7am and we're usually there at least 10 mins earlier, and if we don't eat b'fast when we're on morning duty and it's a long day, we might not get to eat till after 3:30pm or later!
I also eat on the bus, discreetly of course, when I've spent the whole day out and am almost fainting from hunger and the eating places are all crowded because it's meal times.

obviously we did it on non-aircon double deckers, usually on the way to or back from Changi Jetty (where we used to take bumboats to Ubin for camping/hiking)Originally posted by Rhonda:
