Big bellies the new 'in thing'
Forget about slimming. Big bellies are the new 'in' thing on the local showbiz scene.
Celebrities like Evelyn Tan, Zoe Tay, Ivy Lee, May Phua, Li Lin and Sun Ho have all dutifully answered our government's call to procreate.
And these excited mummies-to-be can't wait for their delivery from the stork, reports WENDY TEO ([email protected])

EVELYN TAN, 29
Due for delivery: Jan 3 next year.
And it's a...: Girl.
Baby's name: The would-be parents are still trying to reach a compromise.
Evelyn, who's married to fellow MediaWorks artiste Darren Lim, sighed: 'I wanted Kate, but Darren finds it too bland. He wants Edna, but it's not what I'd choose. Then I picked Claudia, but Darren doesn't like Claudia Schiffer, so...
Planned or accidental parenthood: Accidental.
The couple had planned to have a baby only after one year of marriage, but their mini-me was conceived unexpectedly on their wedding night.
Big belly blues: Backaches and night sickness.
'I can't make any sudden movements, otherwise I will get this really sharp pain up my back. So I have been moving around slowly, like an old woman. I've been doing some yoga and swimming too, to help this condition.'
Baby preparations: Evelyn is still waiting for Darren to be free to help her with the shopping.
'Right now, our house is quite child-unfriendly, so we will need to child-proof the home, buy baby items and also get a baby cot for our room, since the baby will be sleeping with us.' -
SUN HO, 34
Due for delivery: Jan 22 next year.
It's a...: Boy.
'Actually, we were hoping for a girl, because girls are so cute! But, to us, as long as the baby's healthy and is ours, it doesn't matter what sex the child is.'
Baby's name: 'I'm looking for a name that would go well with my husband's surname, Kong. My favourite is Ray, which means King. So it's another way to name my son King Kong without, you know, giving him a funny name. But my husband doesn't want it!' said Sun cheekily.
Planned or accidental parenthood: Accidental.
Sun, who has suffered two miscarriages, knew about her pregnancy only when blood tests were done when she was warded for a stomach ailment in May.
Big belly blues: Because she suffered bleeding in her womb, the singer had to be confined to her bed for the first three months. She also received regular hormone injections. Her condition has stabilised recently.
The singer - who's married to City Harvest Church founder Reverend Kong Hee - said: 'I drag my feet during meal times, I always feel nauseated or about to faint. And after I vomit, I will quickly ask for something to eat, to put it back, so that my baby won't starve.'
Baby preparations: Sun, who's going to Los Angeles in a few weeks' time to record her fourth album, is going to shop for maternity and baby items there.
She said: 'I went shopping for maternity clothes the other day, but all the dresses... they are not to my taste.
'So I can't wait to get my things from LA. I'm even thinking of getting my baby cot from there. Quite ridiculous, I know.' -
ZOE TAY, 36
Due for delivery: Next March.
It's a...: Don't know yet.
Zoe is only 2 1/2 months pregnant, and she can go for an ultrasound scan only after her third month. But she hopes it's a girl 'because girls are more obedient'.
Baby's name: None yet.
Planned parenthood or accident: Planned.
Zoe said she and her hubby, airforce pilot Philip Chionh, had wanted to start a family since 2002, but his regular overseas postings disrupted their plans.
She took leave in June to fly to the US to be with him, but he was posted back instead - which gave them time to make a baby right here!
Big belly blues: Nausea all day long, and she can't stand the smell of fish and oily food.
'I'm also very sensitive to sounds and fragrances,' she said. 'When I'm at home, I like it to be super quiet... but can still play mahjong over the weekend.'
Baby preparations: Both Zoe and her hubby have been reading a lot of books.
She has also been popping supplements prescribed by the doctor, and drinking lots of milk. -
LI LIN, 31
Due for delivery: Next month.
It's a...: Li Lin, who's married to fellow artiste Allan Wu, is not telling.
Baby's name: None yet.
Planned or accidental parenthood: Apparently planned. In previous interviews, both Li Lin and Allan dimissed rumours of a shotgun marriage.
Big belly blues: Nausea and aches in her lower back and hips.
In an e-mail reply, she said: 'Fortunately, in my training as a body expert, I have been able to do stretches and exercises to alleviate any aches and pains, and also strengthening exercises to cope with extra weight.
'In addition, I've just bought a maternity belt to help support this pendulous belly so as to ease pelvic and ligament strain.'
Baby preparations: 'Last weekend, a girlfriend organised a baby shower, so I got some gifts. I'm also going shopping this Friday with another girlfriend for necessities. And we've had some hand-me-downs from a few friends.' -
IVY LEE, 31
Due for delivery: Next February, during the Chinese New Year season.
And it's a...: Not known yet. Ivy will find out when she goes for her screening later this month.
But the actress, who already has a seven-year-old daughter, Mikki, is hoping for another girl.
Why not a boy?
'I don't know, I've never tried (having boys) before...' was her innocent reply.
Baby's name: 'I haven't thought of it yet, but a lot of people have been joking that I should name my baby Minnie, Daisy or Donald, because I named my daughter Mikki (same pronunciation as Mickey).'
Planned or accidental parenthood: Both.
The doting mother has been wanting a second child to fuss over since five years ago, but work schedules always got into the way.
Ivy has been busy with the long-running serial Double Happiness, while her director husband Raymond Choy is frequently in China for work, and they managed to meet for a holiday in Australia only recently.
Ivy found out she was pregnant only when she went for her yearly pap smear test.
Big belly blues: Giddiness, nausea and fainting spells.
All of which, Ivy claims, is probably due to her poor sleeping posture.
She has also developed a craving for strong flavours, and has been indulging in burgers, tomyam soup and Indian food.
Baby preparations: No time for it. It will have to wait until filming for Double Happiness wraps up in November. -
MAY PHUA, 28
Due for delivery: End of January next year.
It's a...: Boy.
Baby's name: 'Hmm... Junior Ong?' said May, who got hitched in July to Mr Mikel Ong, 32, who is in the furniture manufacturing business.
Planned or accidental parenthood: Accidental.
May discovered she was pregnant when the pre-wedding diet she put herself on didn't seem to be working.
She told The New Paper: 'I have been on diets before but this was the first time I kept feeling very hungry and didn't manage to lose any weight at all. So I told my husband, I must be pregnant.'
Sure enough, the results came back positive.
Fortunately, despite her diet attempts, the baby has been pronounced healthy by the gynaecologist.
Big belly blues: None.
'The baby has been very good to me, that's why I didn't know I was pregnant until I was three months along!' said May.
However, May has developed a rather strange craving for century eggs - she has to eat them almost daily.
Baby preparations: 'My sister has given me her baby's stuff. I just need to get a new cot.
'But being pregnant gives new meaning to shopping - now I have an excuse to buy new clothes for my wardrobe!' -

A source close to Hurley said: 'She's trying to keep it quiet and has only told close friends and family.

'Liz said she was just laying off the booze for a while but she's admitted to a handful of us that she's pregnant.'
She and Nayar have been dating for 18 months following her split from Damian's father Steve Bing.

SINGAPORE : MediaCorp actress Wong Li Lin and her husband Allan Wu have become proud parents.
Li Lin gave birth to a baby girl.
It was a normal delivery after more than 15 hours of labour.
Li Lin and her husband have been charting their journey to parenthood on Channel NewsAsia's show, .
The couple will share more on the arrival of their bundle of joy on the show's finale in early November.
"We came in today at 3 am and delivered this child of ours at 6.20 this evening. It weighs 2.9 kilos. It's 49 centimetres in length and its head circumference is 33cm," she said.
"And what's its gender? Female. It's a girl!"

in the Celtic legends, the druids would cast a glamour on the father and he'll bear the pain of childbirth with the mother.. lessening her pain..

JOINING the celebrity mom-to-be brigade is Channel News-Asia host Lisa Ang.

Lisa, who hosts the weekend lifestyle programme Hi Life, is three months pregnant.

She only found out last week when she went to the gynaecologist.

"I was travelling so much for Hi Life that I wasn't sure I was feeling ill from too much travelling or if I was pregnant," she said.

"The good thing is that all of the filming for Hi Life is over. I'm doing a lot of production work now, like editing."

While the filming of the second season of Gourmet Moments, which she also hosts, will begin soon, she expects it to end by December.
The thirty-something is married to former radio DJ Ivan Rantung, who owns a public relations and events management company.

"It wasn't planned, neither was it unplanned. I just celebrated my tenth wedding anniversary recently and we decided we've had enough fun.
