its due to practical reason the nonyas speak chinese. you want a malay and english language show on channel 8? abit appropriate uh...
cos the production team too cheapo to employ jap speaker to dub into the show?

How can they butcher the nonya heritage jus to cater to the audience.......I disagree.
It's like Ken watanabe speaking english in Last Samurai and Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh speaking English in Geisha.
Can't imagine if they do a Genghis Khan epic and he speaks english too.
Just like Masters of the Sea.

so you prefer the nonya heritage to be buried forever in history, with the general public being totally ignorant about its unique culture?
or do you want the show to be film with the actors and actresses speaking hokkien, Malay and English, to be shown on Octo, Suria or channel 5 which have a considerably lower viewer-rate than channel 8?
this drama is like he ping de dai jiak.

yeah. find it disturbingly similar.
but it will do lah. very long don't have WWII dramas alr leh.
some of the younger generation did not seen any local production like he ping de dai jia before leh, so i guess its all right to "remake" these classics every 10 yrs or so.

Think out of the box, not within the mediacorp framework. Language is alrdy a key part of any culture and they cant even get that right with the nonyas. Show it in Ch8 but mingle mandarin speaking Chinese in the show would be a good way. Subtitles can always be mandarin when malay or english is spoken.
