The Oprah Winfrey show all started pretty humbly. In 1984, Oprah Winfrey left the local talk show circuit in Baltimore and moved to the Windy City to host WLS-TV's morning talk show, AM Chicago. Just one month later, AM Chicago became the number one talk show and was expanded to one hour. To bear testimony to OprahÂ’s drawing power, the show was renamed after her. Celebs flock to talk to Oprah (more than 856 celebs have appeared as guests). Three presidents, four first ladies, one reigning queen, one former queen, six princesses, six princes, one earl, one lord, one count and one duchess have since graced The Oprah Winfrey Show stage.
Today, The Oprah Winfrey Show is the number one talk show in the United States for 19 consecutive seasons. It has also won a total of 35 Emmy awards that include nine Emmys for Outstanding Talk Show and seven Emmys for Outstanding Talk Show Host.
In this latest season, meet the likes of hip-hop maestro Kanye West as he talks about his brush with death, identical twins who come to grips with acceptance after one of them undergoes a sex change, a 20-year old man whoÂ’s worth US$100 million, tough songstress Melissa EtheridgeÂ’s private battle with hell and back and a man who finds himself too ugly to look into the mirror.
Empowering, positive and life-affirming, itÂ’s time to get hooked on this talk show.
Happening every Mon-Fri, 6pm from April 3.
