CARLING CUP: WEDNESDAY REVIEW
Chelsea secured their place in the last eight of the Carling Cup with a comfortable 4-0 win over Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.
Frank Lampard, captain in the absence of suspended John Terry, headed the champions in front in the 32nd minute and Shevchenko doubled the lead from the England midfielderÂ’s cross in the 65th minute.
Michael Essien added a third in the 82nd minute after good work by Geremi before Didier Drogba completed the scoring from close range two minutes later.
Tottenham Hotspur were given a scare as League One outfit Port Vale took them to extra time at White Hart Lane.
Leon Constantine fired the underdogs in front midway through the second half, but Martin Jol's side drew level 10 minutes from time when Tom Huddlestone's free-kick appeared to deflect in off the Vale striker.
Huddlestone blasted a second from long range in the first period of extra time before England striker Jermain Defoe wrapped up a 3-1 win from youngster Phil Ifil's cross.
Liverpool also progressed, Daniel Agger scoring the only goal of the game against Coca-Cola Championship battlers Birmingham.
But the Reds were made to work hard for their victory, Craig Bellamy missing the chance to ease the pressure when his tame second-half penalty was saved by Maik Taylor.
The win was marred by a serious injury to midfielder Mohamed Sissoko, who was strechered off with a reported dislocated shoulder following a first-half clash with Mehdi Nafti.
Emmanuel Adebayor's late goal was enough to see Arsenal through against 10-man Everton at Goodison Park.
The Togo frontman met Mathieu Flamini's corner with a powerful unmarked header five minutes from time.
The hosts' task had been made more difficult by the sending-off of Scotland winger James McFadden inside the first 20 minutes, referee Graham Poll making it clear that McFadden had over-stepped the mark with some angry dissent after the Hertfordshire official had waved away appeals for a penalty when Andy Johnson went down in the box.
