Liverpool have emerged as front-runners in the race for Tunisian Hatem Trabelsi.
Skysports.com understand talks are at an advanced stage between the two parties, but Liverpool are yet to decide whether to finalise a move.
Trabelsi is keen on the switch and is thought to have made Anfield his preferred destination.
Coach Rafa Benitez has been actively pursuing Sevilla's Daniel Alves - but that move looks to have faltered, which may well have hastened his move for out-of-contract Trabelsi.
Trabelsi seems set to leave Ajax and following an impressive display at the World Cup finals - a move to England appears the most likely option at this point.
Arsenal are also known to have contacted Trabelsi's advisors - but the Liverpool interest is the furthest forward.

why another centre half ?

Trabelsi can play centre half but he is very much used also as a right back.... the reason for buying alves was that he can play right back and right wing but since that deal seems dead, he can bring in a right back, Trabelsi for free and then spend money on a right winger.

He is used at right back for Tunisia and in fact at Ajax, he plays at right back although he was also considered a competent centre half
