Liverpool aim to trump Arsenal for Trabelsi
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is ready to move for Ajax fullback Hatem Trabelsi.
After talks stalled with Sevilla over Daniel Alves, the Guardian says Benitez is turning to Bosman prospect Trabelsi as a solution to his problems at right-back.
The Tunisia international's agent revealed an offer had been received from Arsenal last week. -
Liverpool boss Benitez to outbid Newcastle for Kuyt
Liverpool have stepped up their bid for Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt.
After talks stalled with Sevilla over fullback Daniel Alves, the Guardian says Reds boss Rafa Benitez is now planning to use the majority of his existing transfer kitty on landing Kuyt.
Their interest in the 23-year-old forward is long-standing but, having spent ?6m on the Wales international Craig Bellamy from Blackburn and having lost out on the possibility of recouping a significant fee through the sale of Djibril Cisse, Benitez would be able to pursue the Dutch forward only if he gives up on Alves.
Kuyt, who has also interested Newcastle, would cost around ?8m having failed to make the anticipated impact at the World Cup, though his record in Holland has established him as a player of exciting potential.
He is due to hold talks at Feyenoord next week but has indicated a desire to play in the Premiership. -

Ajax favourites for Liverpool's Kromkamp
Jan Kromkamp's future at Liverpool is in doubt.
The Holland international has struggled to make an impact at Anfield since his January switch from Villarreal.
The Guardian says Kromkamp will be sold to Ajax should Liverpool bring in a new right-back this summer. -

Liverpool board backs Benitez's Simao bid
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is being backed by the board in his bid for Benfica winger Simao Sabrosa.
The Mirror says Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieira has told Simao he can go and he has set his heart on leaving Portugal.
Valencia are also keen on the talented wide man who had an ill-fated spell at Barcelona.
Simao said: "It's a good sign that the president will open the door for me if a serious offer comes in. I would like to play in a different league and whether that will be returning to Spain or going to England, I do not know."
Benitez will be alerted by Simao's comments, particularly because his attempts to sign Brazilian Daniel Alves have stalled because of Sevilla's ?10m asking price. -

Liverpool and Sevilla are both feeding their respective local news agencies conflicting information as the Daniel Alves saga continues to drag on.
Sources close to Sevilla claim a transfer fee of approximately £10.5million has finally been agreed and that all that needs to be sorted out now now is how that will be paid.
Sources on Merseyside on the other hand claim the proposed transfer is now falling apart (possibly because of a row over how the instalments would work) with Liverpool considering pushing through a proposed move for Jermaine Pennant instead.
If Liverpool were to pull out of a move for Alves and instead signed Pennant, they would also have the cash to fund a move for Dirk Kuyt.
Insider sources reported some time ago that Pennant had already indicated he would make the switch to Anfield even though he always knew he wasn't Rafa's first choice this summer.
We're becoming tired of this one now. We haven't made it a secret that we're concerned about the money Sevilla have been demanding. Would Pennant be a better choice? Would Alves give 100% on a cold winter's night up in the north east when we need everyone to get stuck in? -
What's going on ? Benitez paying 10.5million on the more defensive Alves , and forgo the cheaper more attacking Pennant ?

Crouch has been a good player for Liverpool but can he last any longer if he don't improve any further? -
No way , be cool , no way Benitez is going to sell Crouch , in fact , Crouch will be the first to be in Benitez's team sheet . For Benitez , English football , unlike Spanish football , needs a Big or tall centre forward to win games . Crouch has been a good player for Liverpool but can he last any longer if he don't improve any further?
Does Crouch needs to improve more with his 2005/2006 performance ?
For me , he needs not improve , just be consistent in the way he play , is good enuf .
Now with the more pacey Bellamy , we will see a more complete Liverpool . A new & better Liverpool Michael Owen will regret even more leaving Liverpool at the first place . Just my opinion . -
Liverpool boss Benitez turns to Birmingham's Pennant
Liverpool are ready to launch a bid for Birmingham City winger Jermaine Pennant.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez hoped to sign Seville's attacking right-sided star Daniel Alves, 23, after chasing him for six months.
But the Spanish side will not let the Brazilian leave for less than £10million - a figure Rafa will not pay. Now he will test Birmingham's resolve with a firm £5m offer for winger Pennant, 23.
Benitez had a £3.5m offer rejected by Brum at the end of the season. -

Liverpool deal for Alves still on
Liverpool's bid for Sevilla fullback Daniel Alves is still on.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez is prepared to meet Sevilla's price for the Brazilian, but method payment is stalling negotiations.
Reports from Spain stated Liverpool have offered Sevilla £9.5million for Brazilian right-back Alves, a fee which would rise to almost £11m based on appearances and other bonus payments depending on the player's progress at Anfield. -
Argentinian defender Gabriel Paletta has signed his Liverpool contract.
The 20-year-old began pre-season training yesterday but didn't sign his 4-year deal until today.
Talking about his delight in completing the deal, Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez said: "Paletta is very tough and he's exactly the sort of player we need who will suit the Premiership.
"When you talk about the Argentinian defenders I worked with in Valencia, Paletta is more like Ayala than Pellegrino. If you're talking about Liverpool, he's more like Carra than Sami Hyypia. This is good because we will have a balance in the style of defenders.
"He is a defender with a lot of aggression and we're sure he has a great future. He will learn a lot here, like Daniel Agger, and provide competitiveness in our defence.
"We were watching him in the World Under-21 championships in Holland. That's when our scouts spotted him and we identified him as the kind of player we'd like.
"He has attracted a lot of interest from top clubs in Argentina like River Plate and Boca Juniors. River Plate even reserved a number six shirt for him, so we had to move quickly to sign him.
"We're delighted to have done the deal now." -
Liverpool prepare mega cash, player offer for Joaquin
Liverpool have put together a massive bid for Real Betis wing ace Joaquin.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez is willing to offer ?12 million plus fringe players Jerzy Dudek, Bolo Zenden and Antonio Barragan for the Spain international, reports AS.
Betis have welcomed the interest, with new president Pepe Leon admitting they're prepared to sell Joaquin this summer - if the right offer arrives.
Liverpool want to split the cash component in two, with an initial ?7 million arriving before a second installment of ?5 million being paid in 18 months time.

Mark Gonzales given permission to play in EPL
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has completed a hat-trick of South American signings this week with the club finally winning their battle to claim a work permit for Chilean winger Mark Gonzalez.
On Monday 20-year-old Argentinian defender Gabriel Paletta signed a four-year contract after moving from Banfield.
And while Liverpool were attending the work permit hearing to allow Gonzalez to start his Anfield career, they were also completing the paperwork to secure the services of Valencia's Brazilian full-back Fabio Aurelio on a free transfer.
But the key signing for Benitez has been the arrival of Gonzalez, who has been training at the club this week, after more than a year of wrangling.
The club were finally given the green light to allow the 23-year-old to start his Liverpool career, delayed after the player had an initial application last summer rejected and then an appeal later in the year turned down.
Gonzalez has spent the past six months on loan to Real Sociedad, where he helped them win a relegation battle in La Liga. Benitez, determined to bring him to Anfield, was forced into such a drastic action to keep Gonzalez fit and in match practice ahead of this summer's second application to the Department of Employment to allow Gonzalez to play in the UK.
Benitez said: 'This is very good news for us and I am absolutely delighted to welcome Mark to Liverpool as he is a player the supporters will like to see.
'Mark is an exciting left winger who can cross good balls and beat defenders and he is a very good signing for us. He has a very good mentality as when I was talking with him he told me, 'I want to play for Liverpool'.'
Benitez tried to sign Gonzalez last summer and a fee of around £4million was agreed with Albacete.
But the player was injured at the time with a serious knee problem, and the deal Liverpool proposed was only a loan move because of that injury uncertainty.
Because of Chile's low FIFA ranking and the clear fact that the player could not go straight into the first team, Liverpool's original work permit application was rejected.
Gonzalez was not able to play again until mid-season, and an appeal to the Home Office was also turned down, which left Benitez with the only option of sending the player out on loan to another Spanish club.
Gonzalez's arrival will give Benitez the pace on the left he has needed, and it could well cast a doubt over Harry Kewell's future at the club.
The Australian is currently recovering from the foot injury that ended his World Cup campaign, but he will find Gonzalez a serious threat to his first team place considering how much faith Benitez has put in the player.
It will also allow Benitez to concentrate on the acquisition of another new striker - Feyenoord's Dirk Kuyt is still high on the Liverpool manager's hit list - and a right winger, with Jermaine Pennant a target.
Benitez could also have rekindled his interest in Real Betis star Joaquin.
Benitez has been chasing Sevilla's Daniel Alves, but he has refused to meet the £12million asking price, and that deal looks dead.
So he has retrained his sights on Joaquin, having been linked with the player last season.
The wide man has just returned from World Cup duty and has made it clear that he intends to leave Betis for a new challenge this summer.
Betis' new president Pepe Leon admits he will cash in if the right offer comes along.
He said: 'Betis would be equally happy to keep Joaquin or to have their coffers full. There have always been a lot of teams after the player, but nobody has yet decided to make the final move.'
Spanish sources suggest Liverpool will offer £10million plus Antonio Barragan, Jerzy Dudek and Bolo Zenden to land their man.
Benitez, though, will be just delighted tonight to have finally landed Gonzalez, having heavily criticised the Home Office for their previous refusals to let the player start his career at Anfield.
The arrival of Brazilian wing-back Aurelio, on a free transfer, has been completed now he has put pen to paper on a four-year deal.
He won a Spanish title under Benitez at Valencia and becomes the first Brazilian to play for Liverpool.
Aurelio has also been training with Liverpool this week having seen his Valencia contract run out last Friday, but the fine points of the move have only just been completed.
Benitez said: 'Fabio is a player with a lot of quality and he is a really good signing for us.
'His technical ability is fantastic and he has a great left foot and provides the team with a lot of options. He has a really good mentality and he is a winner.' -

So many good signings. Can't wait for the season to come in. Benitez's abilitary to attract players is there for everyone to see. I believe that if the team gell well and be more consistent then last season, we can at least finish 2nd place but of course I hope we can fight with Chelsea and Arsenal for the EPL title.
