It may not sound anything more than the obvious response to Liverpool’s latest - but most costly - profligacy in front of goal, but Steven Gerrard’s call for extra “shooting practice” following the holders’ Champions League exit to modest Benfica has only highlighted one amazing quirk of Rafa Benitez’s methods: the complete absence of shooting practice in training.
Despite his strikers' repeated failings in front of goal, repeated en masse on Wednesday night as Pool meekly surrendered their Champions League trophy, Benitez revealed at the weekend that shooting practice was not part of his squad's training-ground routine.
While 'scoring exercises' are built into the programme, the Liverpool boss told The Sunday Times that special dispensation for his strikers to practice shooting - and scoring - would essentially be a waste of time.
"We practise crosses, headers, shots, everything but if you leave the strikers to take shots, the difference it would make is not big. I don't think Robbie Fowler can forget how to score, if you've scored 150 goals you canÂ’t learn a lot," he explained.
"It's more important to practise giving good boxes into the box, good passes. If you are creating the chances, what more can you do?"
Err, score, Rafa?
Certainly the Spaniard's lassiez-faire attitude towards the art of scoring does not appeared to be shared his exasperated skipper.
Speaking after a host of missed chances had resulted in Pool's elimination from the Champions League, Gerrard said: "I think it's a lack of confidence. We'll keep working at it and we'll have some extra shooting practice in training."
While Peter Crouch was Liverpool's culprit-in-chief against Benfica, he remains the only striker at Anfield to have scored this season, while the team itself has netted just four times in nine matches. -
If that's true, then they better change the training systems..

liverpool strikers really cannot make it... frankly speaking, even if they bring in ronaldo or mickey mouse, they will fire blank too...
i think they should hire a coach to train strikers to score instead. -

They should start playing their defenders against their strikers.
There is always a reason for failure.
But, for the time being, I have to ban myself for the next three Liverpool matches.
Too painful to see them miss chances and give a stupid grin after that.
That is SICK !

That is the lesson learned for Ah Ben.
As for the match, except for the strikers and taore, the team played well.
It is about quality, not luck.
Crouch is simply not good enough.
Nando should be discharged to be retired.
Cisse should go to another club to play striker role.
I am not sure whether Ah Ben would stay in Liverpool after this defeat.
Yeah , strikers must score goals , but without the good service of delivery , one cannot blame all on that striker force .
We must admit , Benitez had to change the tactics inorder to make full use of Morientes , his long balls tactics doesn't fit into nando's style of play .
Last night , besides pumping long balls into the box for crouch , where's the tactics and creativity ? Long balls is not a creation . -
Even if Liverpool won , i'll stilll bet against them making further progress like last season , this season , we're just not good enough to progress , our tactics deployed aren't attractive enough to go far .
Our main objectives this season , to end up 2nd or 3rd , to gain another entry into next season UCL , and overhaul those departments , and bring in some new faces , and new training regime .
Those player that are not good enough , has to make way .
Hope Benitez and co make a fair decision , let Morientes and Cisse go , and make way for new lethal forces .
And also hope Rick Parry can issue a clear order to Rafa : " Here's 30 m pound s, get who u want ! " -
Reds need new strikers, says Thompson
Former Liverpool captain and assistant manager Phil Thompson believes Liverpool need to rejuvenate their attack.
Liverpool's shortcomings in front of goal were once again evident as they lost their grip on the Champions League at the hands of Benfica last night.
The Reds squandered a number of opportunities at Anfield before going down 2-0 in the second leg of their last-16 clash, and 3-0 on aggregate.
Thompson feels the likes of Fernando Morientes and Djibril Cisse have not proved good enough and has lamented the failure to re-sign Michael Owen last summer.
Thompson, who lifted the European Cup in 1984, told Sky Sports News: 'Morientes has not been doing it, or even the likes of Cisse. There are probably two on that list to move on.
'[Luis] Garcia has scored a lot of goals so maybe there is a bit of leeway there but Liverpool need to score.
'The Michael Owen situation - he shouldn't even have been allowed to go (to Real Madrid in 2004).'
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has been linked with a return to his former club Real Madrid and Inter Milan but Thompson hopes he stays to continue his work at Anfield.
Thompson added: 'Maybe it is his spiritual home, Real Madrid, but it is not the place for him - he could be out of a job in six months.
'He is only just starting at Liverpool and getting the backing of the board. He has still got a job to do. 'Inter Milan may be more worrying, he may get a few more years there, but I hope he stays at Liverpool.'
Former Liverpool striker Ian Rush also hopes to see the club bounce back under Benitez's charge.
Rush said: 'It is disappointing to be out of Europe but it's all about getting ready to compete with Chelsea in the league and next year's Champions League now.
'Benitez is a great manager and hopefully Liverpool can get two or three new players.' -
maybe benitez tatics are not working for the striker see how many goals peter crouch scored for southampthan and how many goals he scored for LFC ? and when morientes was @ monaco he became Top UCL Scorer And Robbie Fowler is also a regular goal scorer.
I think Benitez Attacking tatics all went wrong for LFC............thier tatics is keep attacking on flanks and crossing the ball in but they do not attack from middle using through ball and passing regular enough..................so benitez maybe should think of other options of attacking instead of blaming his strikers
