You are assigning names like "law" and "God".... dun assign and your mind shall be free....
Its so difficult to explain to you becos u do not have the essential buddhist knowledge....sorry....I can't and dunno how to explain to you....Hahaha!
Demon Bane,
The laws of gravity are such because God established them and upholds them. That's why the universe is intelligible and we can go about our science and discover how things work, because God who is rational and orderly created the world to be such.
I am no more assigning names than you are in calling things "karma", "good", "evil". We should not despise the use of words, they are meaningful for communication.
I do have some knowledge of Buddhism, and there's no harm trying to explain things as simple as possible to the best of your ability. That's what I have been doing anyway for the Christian faith.

Your last sentence is interesting....how to explain what goes up must come down if one doesn't believe in gravitational force, how to show the beauty of a rainbow in the sky when one demands the proof that water can stay in the sky?
how to explain to people about a religion if he doesn't believe in God?....Hahaha!

Yes, Karma is a name also....we have to call it something....Hahaha!
No, I dun think God created it...in fact in buddhism, even God/Gods are bounded by karmic laws....I can't go any simpler than this....Hahaha!

That's why I've confessed that the concept of Karma is so difficult to describe, to study or to understand....Hahaha!

But then you are saying that impersonal karmic laws are ultimate and eternal and permanent. But how does the impersonal give rise or cause to exist that which is personal?

Its like this:
The law that says "study hard and you will pass the exams, dun do that and you will fail"...who decides whether you pass or u fail ? It can be your teacher, the examiners or simply yourself too !
Who set this law ? Definitely not God....but it is true right ?
I'm not implying that the laws of karma are impersonal. ultimate, eternal, permanent....I'm just saying that it dun bounded by it....

Demon Bane,
But the thing is that the laws of our country are the brainchild of somebody. The law does not literally say anything. People make up the laws and codified them. That's my point, laws have lawmakers and these lawmakers are persons, not things.

I was like you once...until I truly learned how "not to assign names, values, opinions"....Hahaha! I'm a buddhist by faith....and faith is not about having all the right answers....

Please read the above again...that law is not set by anybody....but its true....it has no beginning and no ending also....before I said that, it already existed....I can't go simpler than that.... Karma is as such....

do you think their replies are warped and illogical? If not they are diverting attention away from the question and they can go on and on. anything but the question. selective reading and replying isnt it

BIC
Please specify which God because it could mean Allah, Jesus, Jehovah, YHWH, Sikh God or Lord Brahma.
Or you mean God in general?

The more you see, the less you know....hahaha! No lah, I dun think they are like that...but people wanna win in debates mah....this is still a christian forum....so they are entitled to their own opinions and answers and facts lor....Hahaha!

But I think you do realise that assigning names and values are essential to have any meaningful communication. Faith may not be about having all the answers but the answers must not be irrational or illogical, do you agree?

Yes, we have to communicate....but when we are not communicating, we can meditate upon what we know, then remove all the labels, names, impressions, pictures, love, hate, opinions, values, past, present, future, logic, reasoning etc. We can see clearer the answers just emerge by itself....Of coz you must practice to quiet your minds....nobody can do that right away, need alot of efforts, becos the conscious minds are so irritating and prevents us from higher consciousness.

A food for thought....

Demon Bane,
When you remove all the stuff you mentioned above your mind will be blank, then on what are you meditating upon? Pardon me but it seems more like emptying the mind than quieting the mind. The Bible teaches us to meditate on the Word of God.

Hi BIC, for me they are the same thing...."emptiness"...the true nature of all phenomena. Of coz there are other schools who taught on the meditation on breathing, focus on a point, a rhythmic chant, or in your case "the word of God"....

Demon Bane,
Are you talking about an eternal karmic law that exists as a brute fact that is apparently impersonal and possesses no mind of its own, but yet could somehow bring to existence the material universe and life therein, and then judge good and evil and dispense retributive judgement on evil doers and reward the righteous?

if you do not know what is meditation and pass off comments like this, you are just as ignorant and shallow mindeded like your good friend Rony Tan.

Demon Bane,
How can something and nothing be the same thing aka emptiness?

And you added NOTHING to my dialogue with Demon Bane. Please step aside, unless you have something to add besides your insults. Thank you.

According to buddhism, emptiness is form and form is emptiness... u may wanna google for this.... 色是空,空是色....
Nobody can get it right away....It requires alot of practice and efforts....then u shall see things as they really are....

Even the greatest buddhist scholars also can't explain fully what is karma....I think if you are interested in this topic, try asking the experts over at the buddhism forum....
I've explained it in my previous posts...can't go any simpler liao....Hahaha!
