what is the usual start up capitial to open a church?
A few millions to begin with to acquire land.
If they rent a place, a few hundred thousands is needed for deposit.
But as soon as they gather members, they will have tithes and offerings to fund all the rental and payments. The pastors in most churches in singapore are paid quite well, yes even in the small churches.

Hi win,
Yea I know there are pastors who are paid lowly. But I know pastors from many churches (small or big) who live in condos, landed property and drive cars.

I think some do have doubts but they just brush the doubts aside because preaching is their "rice bowl",. If they dont preach, they cant find another job.
But there are some others who "sincerely" believe in what they preach too.
Then there are also the con artist pastors.

how can they do not have doubts when clearly there are so many paradoxes in the belief system?even if I am a christian, I do not think I will last that long, cos I am a natural doubting Thomas.

Maybe they should, because the bible says they need to sell everything to follow jesus.
Well, then you will say "oh this verse dont apply"

You asked me if pastors should all live in the wild and eat honey. I answered you. Yes they should if they believe in the bible because the bible says YOU as a christian must sell everything to follow jesus.
Are you gonna say "oh this verse dont apply to me anymore!"
Lol..serious answers from you sgdiehard, please?

Susan,
I won't bother with other religions. But please prove your case that Christianity is bogus or else refrain from making such remarks. It's easy to hide behind a keyboard and make such claims. But can your claim withstand public scrutiny?

Tcmc,
Seriously, no pastors in their right mind want to stay in caves, with you as neighbour. that is serious!

Even if we showed you the errors in the bible (which is supposedly perfect and inspired by an allknowing god), you would still brush them aside and say that "god works in mysterious ways". You need to pluck up courage yourself and come to terms that the christian god might not be possible when you study the bible hard enough.
It's really for yourself to admit. I took a lot of courage to lay down my religion and beliefs and thats why I left christianity. It was hard, but i treasure logic and truth more than my baseless beliefs.

sgdiehard!
Exactly! That is why no pastors ever bothered about the verse that says that jesus told christians to sell away everything! That is why that verse is always ignoreed! You agree too that pastors who are sane will never obey that verse!

Tcmc,
From what I see, you ditched Christianity not because you knew enough, but because you lacked the proper foundation to handle objections to the faith. You show me any so-called error and I am sure there is always a good rebuttal. And BTW, the answer that "God works in mysterious ways" can be a valid answer to some questions, but I wouldn't bank on that as an answer to every question. If you can cut some slack for scientists who don't know everything, why can't you do the same for Christians? Double standards?
