Actually when were the schools told to stop such nonsense? I was in JC 1999 and 2000, so i guess it gotta be after that?
I go ask my junior here whether they still do such things or not..
Every school has its own code of conduct. My sec sch banned having fringes touching our brows for girls and guys are not allowed to have hair touching their ears.I dont agree. I think it is too dogmatic to do that. We should bring this to the straits times forum!
In this case, the Anglican School decides that all students should not read Harry Potter. I guess there is nothing wrong with the ban. Likewise, there is nothing wrong with my sec sch insisting on girls cutting their fringe real short.
ello, any younger than that i prolly dont rem, i only rem france won world cup 98..Originally posted by Poopie-Head:wah kaoz ur memory very bad hor?
No, it was years before yours. That's why the big problem is that the schools know about it but they still do it. Zhi fa fan fa, zui jia yi den (double punishment!)
these schools diam diam slowly revert back to their old pattern, think no one remember huh? and the worse thing is they are RIGHT The authorities never check them again. Either that, or they close one eye, or that these nonsense was approved
Eitherway, we must do something to stop this.

I agree with u.Originally posted by nightzip:I dont agree. I think it is too dogmatic to do that. We should bring this to the straits times forum!
Now, everyone including the education ministry (i.e. the tudong issue) is trying to make everyone equal, rite? and unless they have a GOOD reason for not letting people read Harry Potter, they should say so.
There is nothing wrong with reading stories of vampires or ghost story books in my primary and secondary school. so why should they impose this ban? and further, the english and grammar in Harry Potter books are also ok and serves to let students be expose to the language more. But ofcourse, comics may be banned.
Again, I think we should bring this to the straits times forum.
Just adding a little bit to this.Originally posted by stupidissmart:The reasons behind banning harry potter in anglican school is the same reason for banning pokemon (or digimon) in some conservative muslim regions. They felt tat the star of david during one of its transformation is linked with jews. Even though the content of the book is okie, they ban it just because they felt it was associated with something else. If u ask me, it has gone overboard.
It's not a discrimination. You're limited by your own choice or preference. It's not like the schools don't allow you to enrol just because you're not of a certain belief. I don't think MOE has any requirements on religious issues for schools. Their requirements are basically academic and administrative. As said again, everyone should be free to make christrian or mission schools as their choice of schools for watever reasons they have and NOT have to live through their unreasonable and unlawful acts of being coerce to paticipate in a religious ritual. If u say if u "don't like the rituals, don't join the school" philosophy, then u r already discriminating the other people of their religions by limiting their choices of schools available to them. Again I had to say, schools r LEGALLY bound to prevent such incidents from happening. Don't like it ? DON'T START ANY SCHOOLS IN SINGAPORE LAH. Same like your argument mah, don't like it go to other schools lor.
Personally, as long as the school doesn't make you do degrading or unethical acts, some rules are harmlessIt may appears to be harmless to u but it may be very offensive to others. I don't see why pokemon or harry potter have to be banned no matter wat u guys say. If u go to a buddhist schools just because it is near your home, and u r FORCED to bow to the statue and read their prayers and only provide vegetarian meals in the canteen, how will u feel ? (the example given is just for illustration, not actual situation)
if you don't want to goto mass, its your right and choice, and the school can't do anything about it. Lan Lan..If i ever get any news of these schools tring to be funny and force people to go to their rituals, then I am gonna make sure it was well-complained, the school to be properly punished and such behaviors stopped. U don't like it ? Lan lan...
if the school bans harry potter books its the school's right and choice, shut up and get on with your life. simple?
anyway stupidissmart, now you know the "mission" school is slightly different, you can always opt out and change school. if you're not smart enough to go to a good school without the religious constrants, then suck thumb la. complain so much for what?Singapore focus on religious harmony. If u don't like being complained and to be stopped, then go to another country and start your religious school there. There r so many other countries n the world.
if you don't like the rules, change school lor, if you joined the school because of her reputation, and if reputation is your piority, see if you can go into RI lor, if cannot, suck thumb la. what you want?If we want to follow our religion strictly, then we cannot choose christian schools ? So u agree tat there should be religious discrimination ?
you want to talk about religious harmony? harry potter books promotes witchcraft, which is against our believes. its only natural for the school of a christian background to ban it. are you "religiously sensitive" enough to see that? are you sure you aren't bias at all? the school didn't crucify the students for reading it, just merely disallow the students from reading it in school, you're free to do whatever you like outside it. it's pretty fair rule. and in doing so, they didn't compromise their believes, but didn't impose and try to change their lives outside the school boundariesu feel tat bowing to a statue is equal to bowing to a rock, then how good r u at being religiously sensitive ? If u talk about witch craft, frankly they r everywhere. Even lord of the rings, most RPGs and many comics have wizards as well, why don't u ban it as well ? It is a fact tat u r religious insensitive, u only care about your own religion, and impose rules so tat all the people from other religion have to bend to it. I purposely like to read harry potter books in schools, why stop me ? Just because of your religion, u restraint my freedom of action ? Tis again is religion discrimination.
Oh well, better to be safe than sorry. Children may get obsessed with Pokemon and anyone can get obsessed with Harry P. If there really is a hidden meaning behind the names of some Pokemon , then I'd rather not know anything about it at all. Anyway, an Islamic country allowing something that might have hidden anti-islamic messages? They won't take risks.children can get obsessed with anything. There r many much more children from other countries watching such shows, books and nothing wrong had happened to them. Laws should be imposed after long considerations and should have a strong reason for such imposement. Frankly about pokemon and harry potter, it doesn't make your religion look good.
The other things children get obsessed with don't contain anything sacreligous. Even if nothing happens to them, subconsciously promoting something that you're actually against is wrong.

Church of England slams BBC for airing PS
BBC recently had a viewing of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on Christmas day. The Church of England was enraged at the fact that the BBC aired a show blatantly "dealing with the supernatural" on a day like Christmas.

But almost the whole nation is the same religiom! And I can tell you, the children there are religous at a young age. The parents make them understand why some things are wrong and they understandLast time I heard of it, malaysia seems to ban the show. r all the population muslims ? If I am not wrong, people of the other religions took at least 20% of the population. If u ask me wat is wrong with pokemon... I really don't have a clue. If I am not wrong even the bad guys r cute and good in nature.
I used to like pokemon when I was younger. But when I found out that it contained hidden sacreligous messages, I abandoned it.U see, when u like pokemon, it doesn't do anything to u. A good example is u, u r still a muslim isn't it ? Has it affect u in any way ? The names of the monster doesn't mean anything and neither does the producer of the show have such intent. It is u who think it too seriously to come out with the conclusion tat it is bad for your religion. If u talk about sacreligous, your name can become sacreligous as well since it has a figure "69" in it. Maybe it is time for u to think if u r really blindly following your faith to an extent tat watching pokemon becomes a sin. Who says tat pokemon is wrong ? Do the scrioture says pokemon is wrong ? Probably some human who may end up misinterpreting it.

Frankly... wat is your age ?
The names do have meanings!Does the name of pokemon meant anything like "Fu*k your mother" (tis is for u) in there ? If u ask me, u exaggerated the impact of the names. It is probably more like Mummio and u interprete it as mummy, link it to egytian and say it is bad scriptually since egytians chase after moses or something. "Charmander" may just means a salamander look alike monster tat can charm people. But then it is interpreted in a twisted way tat it becomes obscene to your religion
If the name of some Pokemon has the hidden meaning "Fu*k your mother" (specifically you), would you support it?
"six six six" is the ones that Christians hate. Also, thirteen. Not 69. I think 6 and 9 looks cool because you can flip them and then it's the other number.I don't know if u r trying to act innocent but figure 69 has a well known sexual meaning to it.
If there is anything sacreligous in my nickname, I would change it right away.
"Fu*k your mother" was just an example. I chose "your mother" because it's something dear to you. Just like how dear my religion is to me.

I found out the meaning of 69 much later when I made my account. It doesn't offend anyone, and my intention wasn't for it to be the meaning you were thinking. Why doesn't it occur to u tat tis sort of things will happen to some pokemon monster naming producer as well ? They don't know any hidden meaning to the names, I mean r u expecting them to do a research on ALL LANGUAGES, SYMBOLS, MEANINGs of ALL CULTURES and RELIGION and ALL THEIR TRANSLATED PHONETICS IN ALL LANGUAGES before naming of ALL the few THOUSANDS monsters in the show ? U yourself make a mistake in your naming as it is sexually wrong. But u do it because u do not know and I won't condemn u because of it. But why can u afford to make mistakes while the others can't ?
