I remember the muslims were the only people who were excused from attending and they had free-time in one of the classrooms. One of my indian friends 'escaped' by declaring himself muslim and I did the same 
but the teachers didnt believe me coz I'm chinese!~~~ LMAO Cant a chinese be a muslim?? Haiz...
Nevertheless, I must say i had great fun. Not in the chapel, but the process of escaping from it, and the stupid excuses the teachers gave to force me to go.

Basically they let all Malay and Indian Muslims go off. As long as you are Chinese and others, they forced you to attend the chapel. That time still young, everyone just tiam tiam blur blur follow....
Anyway, such actions are illegal. The schools cant say that because you join the school, u have to follow the activities and rules there. Bearing in mind they are forcing u to join a religious activity, its basically breaking the law against freedom of religious beliefs.
But since we are all young, nobody know their rights. Its good someone raise this issue up. The only consolation i got is that i got good Christian friends who arent at the very least nasty as people in this forum. -

But from what I can see, even after the case was mentioned and published in the papers, and the authorities giving strict instructions for schools not to do it, you are still getting such treatment.

That time not that young liaoz lah, 17 years old liaoz. I already know it is wrong of them and that they cannot force me to go, thats why I played all those 'catching' with them. The only thing is i didn't report it to the authorities (police, ed ministry) or the media - i bet the media will be VERY interested in such juicy news and put a fast stop to such nonsense. The media wasn't so easily accessible compared to now (i didn't know how to contact them back then). -

Too bad for you that you got bullied into attending chapel during your school days. But all my friends who attended mission sch (both Protestants & Catholic) are not made compulsory to attend any services. )
To name a few : Anglo Chinese High, St Pats, SJI, ChristChurch Methodist School (not sure if this is the correct name. Only remember it's methodist school).
Assuming that your teachers did force you and other students to attend chapel, I certainly don't condone .

This topic is about mission schools setting the school rules partially based on the religious teaching. HP is banned in Christian schools because witchcraft is not allowed as far as Christians groups are concerned. That is why the anglican school that was mentioned by the thread starter banned such books.
Likewise, bowing to the statue was one of the rules set by Maha Bodhi School. Not talking about the buddist religion itself. I'm talking about the school basing their school rules on the religion.
Which school forced you to attend chapel? Actually you could complain to Ministry, couldn't you?

well, i say they are fried because my parents are pastors that have practice for 20+years le, and that, well, for schools like SAJC, ACJC, i guess they have their stuff they need to put in, but well, they are not forcing down the religion right? as in they don't go around telling you that you will not promote if you dun believe what, still, i would agree forcing students to go chapel is not correct, encourage should be the move...

the founder was also here on an evangelistic mission.. methodist...

In anyway, its common knowledge that students in SAJC, CJC ACJC have to attend chapel service. I dont know whats the situation now. And those who do not, run in foul of the school rules. And this prolly happened to many primary and secondary schools, like Fairfield Methodist Primary and Secondary.
And while we, as adults can talk abt discouraging such behaviour, bear in mind most of the students in JC are 17 and 18. They hadnt a clue what is the law and what are their rights.
And talking to one of the forumnite, I believe Religious Studies has been taken off the syllabus, so there isnt much 'religious' in the secular education except for madrasah. And Kuali is right. Its ironic these schools did such things while commemorating religious harmony day, which i believe to fall in Feb (?). -
