I'm not a christian but I went to an anglican school. They banned Harry Potter books. (?) Why is this so? Is it because of the "Witchcraft and Wizardry" involved?

Did they also ban "The Witches" and "Mathilda"?
Why do they impose their beliefs on people?
On another note ACJC staged "Wizard Of Oz" last year without a hitch. -
i guess anglincan(spell) church and schools are too particular over things....empahsises on TOO

Every school has its own code of conduct. My sec sch banned having fringes touching our brows for girls and guys are not allowed to have hair touching their ears.
In this case, the Anglican School decides that all students should not read Harry Potter. I guess there is nothing wrong with the ban. Likewise, there is nothing wrong with my sec sch insisting on girls cutting their fringe real short. -
i came from an anglican school and it's things are pretty much relaxed there. o_O

most christian community discourages the reading of harry potter.
there's alot of underlying mystism and alot of characters and background comes from various superstition and stuff like that.
its an ok read la. i prefer watching the movie though. the book abit long for my liking.
and besides, chrsitianity forbids the practice of witchcraft.
in harry potter, the "normal" people practice magic while people who don't are "abnormal" stuff like that la.
there's alot of reasons behind the discouragement.. don't be so quick to think common sense were fried

The reasons behind banning harry potter in anglican school is the same reason for banning pokemon (or digimon) in some conservative muslim regions. They felt tat the star of david during one of its transformation is linked with jews. Even though the content of the book is okie, they ban it just because they felt it was associated with something else. If u ask me, it has gone overboard.

That one is even more overboard. My fringe touch eyebrows, will affect my studies? -
While some schools ban certain things... other school force students into doing other things.
A local buddhist pri sch wants students to bow whenever they walk past a buddha statue, regardless of what religion you are. At least Christian school teachers don't force you to attend morning Mass or Service if you're not a baptised Christians. -
If your school cannot wear fringe too... frankly I find tat too strict as well. However we cannot allow students to keep their hair as messy (punkster hairstyle) as they like so it is good to set some restriction. However just on the fringe itself, I find it pretty redundant.
Is there any school where they force its student to bow before a buddha statue ? Tis seems to be new to me... -

Secondly, u realli sure teachers dont force u to attend Mass or Chapel service in Xtians schools? Think again....i come from one such JC which does that. -
To add, last time I used to give some deference to christianity and the believers..
Now i dont even bother when I see a statue of jesus..

but i heard a year after i left, they were told not to force students to attend chapel anymore. the big hoo-haa made it to the first page top news of Straits Times.
I remember I had fun running from the chapel. I was thinking what can the teachers do to me if i refuse to attend, are they gonna kick me out of that school? What reason could they use? But in the end, i attended becoz there was a very nice teacher who asked me to go, i dont wanna make things difficult for her. 
I have very very bad impression of that JC - their rules are too strict, some teachers are too bossy and arrogant. oh well.... -

Was from ACJC...and the teachers there are bloody bossy and arrogant, not to mention breathing down one neck all the time..
and this comment does not come only from me or few people, it comes also from friends who spent first three months in other JCs and came into AC after getting their Os results...
And boy am i glad that someone wrote to ST abt this, goodness, if such behaviour comes from gahmen schools, missionary or not, goes unchecked, we will have exactly the people we see in this forum - total disregard for other people beliefs in a small but diverse multi religious society... -

They are everywhere...I do remember one letter a few years ago where the author petitioned the authorities to ban Harry Potter. It received a mention in Neil Humphreys's "Notes From An Even Smaller Island." I'm appalled that the editor decided to publish it!

They still doing it now?! I thought they got a warning already. ah well, that's what we call media. I remember the muslims were the only people who were excused from attending and they had free-time in one of the classrooms. One of my indian friends 'escaped' by declaring himself muslim and I did the same but the teachers didnt believe me coz I'm chinese!~~~ LMAO Cant a chinese be a muslim?? Haiz...
Nevertheless, I must say i had great fun. Not in the chapel, but the process of escaping from it, and the stupid excuses the teachers gave to force me to go.
