you made an excellent choice. this forum has been relatively "dead"
Anyway, US PS2 and Asian or Jap PS2 have no major difference if the sets are modded. But up till now only US PS2 set can play online game. Jap PS2 still cannot (at least not now). -
Now the better mod chips are DMS3 and Messiah pro 2.
Both are able to play all types of games (Original DVD,dual layer DVD, CD and Backup DVD, CDs).
The only difference is that DMS3 has a region X facility. That means your PS2 modded with DMS3 can watch any DVD movie from every region (i.e code 1 to 5 or 6). -

if not messiah 2 pro modded set will do.
