Those games mentioned above are all Real-Time Strategy (RTS) games. But overall, the better ones are still turn-based strategy games as they are the ones that need a lot more of strategic thinking and planning.

Definitely not like Heroes of Might and Magic.

In this game, you are a leader of a civilization.
You need to explore, look for resources and planets that can support life.
You need to keep researching better technology to make your civilization more advanced and powerful.
You need to establish trade routes with other civilizations to boost your economy.
You need design/customize your space ships and build as many of them as you can afford.
The game can get very challenging when your opponents declare war on you.
And many more features...
Anyway, no point saying so much. You need to play for yourself to see how great this game really is.

Civ4 or rather, Civilisation games are one of the best strategy games around. Can be said to be a genre itself.
