Why do games have cheat codes??

  Yea. Most of the time, the programmer tends to be eccentric and offers quick route for players to complete the game.

  for different reasons.
  
  some games have cheats for fun, so u can do stuff u cant normally do.
  
  some games have cheats in developer mode, cuz the makers maybe want to test something or watever so they implement a way for themselves to set different stuffs in the game. and when the game is finished the mode still exists and become cheats.

  Easter eggs are something they put secretly into software, movies, games etc.
  
  It's not easy to find, and they have a meaning behind.

  try playing d2 open b.net with character editor. theres no such word as die in there. 2 heroes can fight for few hours without even moving their lifes.

  Because some n00bs may find the game too difficult to complete without cheats.
  
  Personally, I still can't complete the legendary Contra without the '30 lives' cheat.
