Modding the game console to be illegal?

  It's a bit ridiculous. Modifying the set shouldn't be a crime. But of course duplicating a copy of the game is.
  
  I think even playing pirated games is within legal boundaries.

  i still think the console-makers cause this themselves...
  
  they region-code their games.. so if i wanna play NTSC/UC games, i have to get another set through parallel imports because singapore sells NTSC/J sets...
  
  and i ain't about to go get another set to play the US games... so i insert a mod chip..
  
  however, with that chip, i can play pirated games..

  I can't see the crime of modding the game console. But of course I didn't read that newpaper article.
  
  But modding game consoles isn't a violation of any current copyright laws, at least.

  how about allowing a chip that plays only original games regardless of region.
  
  Those chips that plays pirated games are illegal and anyone caught modding it will be caned twice
