How long shld one couple date b4 marriage?

JUst wondering..
There are sayings that u shldnt date longer than 3 yrs. Some pple say htat 2 or 3 yrs into the relationship, u will know whether this person is really the type of person u wanna spend ur life with. Relationship lasting more than 7 yrs will not work out if u havent got married by then.
Is a long courtship an advantage or disadvantage?
Yrs ago, i had a fren whose wife to be dumped him on his wedding day. They dated like 7 to 8 yrs b4 deciding marriage. I heard of cases where couples eventually broke up after 6 to 9 yrs in the relationship. And they are all just b4 marriage or when they decide to plan for marriage. Kinda sad huh? -
Well, yes it's sad.
But then again, we've heard of success stories too right?

there is no instruction manual to this.......
last time ppl dun even know how the wife/hubby look like until the nite the groom lift the veil.....but they can still spend the rest of their lives together
now we have all kinds of ways to find partners, choose partners, evaluate partners, dump partners.....
and a lot still dun end up living happily ever after....
so it's hard to say lah -

My wife's brother and his wife got to know each other for 2 years only then happily married liao. Now got child oredi.
But me 4 years then married and still childless aft aft another 4 years, quarreling almost everyday.
My cousins worst...married 2 years liao quietly divorced. -

sad stuff la... but then there shouldnt be a time limit b4 marriage... before u go into marriage, better to know each other well enuff so there wun be the shock when owning a home... long courtship is good in terms it gives u the great test of whether u can go all the way... but its jz a general way of saying... as for the cases, it jz goes down to the partner having butterflies in stomach and also getting sian of the relationship without realising their purpose of together ba...Originally posted by babyreyes:JUst wondering..

It's a rubbish to say that there is a certain period after one should or shouldn't marry. When the two ppl match, they won't quarrel, if they don't they will quarrel and part. If they are supposed to part, they will part even after marriage - divorce. It's not a matter of time.
Though it has been proven that after 3 to 5 years the love fades and the couple stays together coz they got used to each other, or they part. The love fades also when they marry, but they got used to each other. -
Love before and after marriage takes a different form. Whether a relationship lasts after marriage depends on how it has evolved, or devolved.
There is one example with marriage after 7 years of courtship, marriage now moving towards 6th year, with a sweet little boy.
There is another example. 0 years of courtship because of match-making. Happily married for about 33 years without any quarrels at all.
There are of course numerous other examples where short and long courtships fail to evolve into marriage, or resulted marriage last or break. The fact remains that you would never know until you die with your spouse by your side.
It is all about how love evolves in managing a relationship as it changes first from courtship, to marriage, to co-parents. -
