    • instead of appointing a lawyer which'll probably cost more....why don't you just file a claim via the small claims tribunal? you need only to pay $10 (for claim amounts not exceeding $5000) or $20 (claims amts not exceeding $10000) or 1% of claim amt (amt not exceeding $20000)? http://app.subcourts.gov.sg/sct/page.aspx?pageid=4515

if you've all the legit documentation - invoices, contract details, receipts etc...then you'll have a stronger case.

you might also have to pay a couple of dollars to do an information search of the company that you are filing a claim against. through that, you can obtain the boss's home address from the company's info....worse come to worse, you can go harrass him at his home =P

    • hey gums! thanks for the tips. ya...i'm a big lighthouse fan...so am hoping to check out Cape Byron lighthouse. nimbin sounds like a great idea too if not for the fact that we are in a rush...and the route deviation will take us at least another 3+hrs and not including sightseeing. i'll definitely go check out the visitors' centre like you've recommended. what's cheeky monkey wet-tshirt???!!

    • i was at kota kinabalu...watched the news on tv at the hotel...at first, i also thought it was some action movie..then realised to my horror that it was for real. for the next couple of days...instead of enjoying my R&R holiday....was glued to the tv following the news. the collapse of the twin towers shown on tv was really like a nightmare came true. what a disaster!

yup..indeed. but thing is...given that the sg banks are under super high scrutiny and that everything is highly controlled & regulated by MAS..such that the banks are highly conservative in their investments/loans...the risks of bank failures should be lower in singapore...than in other countries. even if anything were to happen to sg banks...the govt is likely to step in to ensure that there won't be mass panic & hardship.

From what she tells me, US banks has a insured amount of your deposits.  I think its....the banks tells them they are insured up to 500k, then most bank users will only keep 500k i that bank.

I told her that sg banks does not seem to have these insurances.

sg bank insures up to SGD20,000 of your deposit.

    • if it's about $$...can always assure family that you'll continue to support them. with internet banking and stuffs...it's so easy to transfer money even across countries. or can just continue to maintain a local bank account to transfer money from into your parents' account.

ohh...if you stay at tawaramachi...then you can explore tokyo instead. tawaramachi is where you can find many of those shops that sell the plastic food models - very interesting to look at, quite expensive to buy. it's also near to kappabashi where you can find all kinds of kitchen utensils & supplies.

you can also walk around ueno which is not far from tawaramachi. there are quite a few departmental stores i.e. marui, atre etc...there's also the famous bazaar - ameyoko where you'll be able to find interesting stuffs i.e. bags, clothes, shoes, food at affordable prices.

nearer okachimachi is this departmental store called Takeya (it's a 7-8 storey tall purple building)...that's where the locals shop for all kinds of stuffs. you can get stuffs like japanese crackers/mochi/bean cakes at very cheap prices...apart from food, you can find almost any and everything at Takeya. but be prepared to jostle with the crowd 'cos it can be super crowded. the place can be quite confusing 'cos Takeya has got a few annexes. try to get hold of a store directory so that you'll know which building has what.

    • i've never lived overseas for a particularly long period of time...i've learnt my english in singapore..so i think i speak quite normally...just that i don't speak singlish. somehow, strangers always think i'm from overseas. taxi drivers will always ask me what country i'm from????? when i speak mandarin in china...the local chinese will ask me which part of china i'm from?????? i should just learn to keep my mouth shut.

if they haven't even discussed these issues or aren't comfortable yet to discuss these....then they are probably not ready for marriage yet.

you don't wait till after marriage to discuss these issues....by then, it'd be too late if they find that they can't see eye to eye.

i thot that in japan...the regular practice is for the wives to hold the purse strings...while the husbands are only given allowances =P

yah...someone was telling me that based on her own experiences...paying for excesss luggage can be super expensive on certain flights bound for US. so in the end...she'd rather just pay for another plane ticket to enjoy the additional luggage allowance!!!

Bring your hubby's employment letters, that letter to state that your family is moving with him to USA.  Bring down to Cantonment Police Complex, 2nd floor near to the Canteen.  Bring ICs and BCs and employment letters if you can.

Bring about $50/-.  They can prepare the CNCC for you and hub within 2 hours.

that's amazing...i never knew they do that. you folks are really a wealth of knowledge and experience!!!!  actually...if the police can do something like that...i wonder if our local banks can also provide such reference letter to reflect our good credit history in singapore?! just a thought....
