There is nothing like a scandal involving porn films claimed on Commons
expenses to focus attention on the pay and perks enjoyed, sorry earned,
by our public servants.
Even before Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, was forced to
apologise for her husband's blue movies there had been calls for the
whole system to be overturned. The committee on standards in public
life which has promised to report on MP pay and expenses by the end of
the year is under pressure to do something radical.
Whenever MPs come under attack over pay they are quick to argue
that compared to executives in the private and public sector they are
not particularly well paid.
With the G20 leaders in the country we thought it was worth getting
a snapshot of how much the highest paid presidents and prime ministers
around the world earn. For comparison's sake all earnings have been
converted into dollars. It also shows basic annual salary only, not the
expenses claimed on top.
So, where does our own Gordon Brown stand?

http://www.salary.sg/2008/civil-service-bonus-2008-and-pay-cut-for-ministers/
These are the new salaries:
Converted to USD at rate of 1.5 SGD to 1 USD
Whoa, the 1st and the 2nd very big gap!
For a small state like Singapore, the ministers are thick skinned and shameless enough to pay themselves with highest pay in the world.
Not bad.
Must be thick skinned to succeed in politics I guess.

2. Donald Tsang Yum-Kuen - Hong Kong

Good thing mainstream media all state controlled here, or else the press will have some fun mocking our PM.
Try this type of shit in Taiwan, game over for you.

4&5 Senior Minister S$3,043,300
6. Deputy Prime Minister S$2,452,500
7. Minister and Senior Perm Sec S$1,940,000
I'm pretty sure we have the top 10 highest paid politicians all in our country.
Lee Kuan Yew at the May Day Rally on 1 May 1961 (est. 2009). had made a glorious speech:
" Singaporeans - are pleased that there is a government working definitely on fixed principles in the interests of the working class, a government which keeps predatory instincts of the employer, be he a local or foreign one, keeps his avarice and his greed in check...... "
Unfortunately, is there anyone left to keep the avarice and greed of his government in check ?
The salary paid to the President and the Ministers amount to robbing the bank stuffed with the hard earned money taxed from the toil and sweat of Singaporeans.
As matters stand, the Singapore Government treasury is bloated to the extreme that allow GIC and Temasek to be managing funds that are figured by some to be approximately US$800 Billion, while Singaporeans have to pinch every penny to keep our heads above water.

now then you know?
It is really unfair to criticize our politicians of "sucking" money from their people and leave them to poverty which is certainly untrue. Compare yourself to countries like Iraq where the late Saddam Hussein decorated his quarters with gold toilet seats while his people struggled to make ends meet. That is despeicable. However in Singapore, the story is different. Yes the lay person may not be very well-off, but we are not several from adverse poverty just like China experiences in some part of their country. Zimbabwe under Mugabe was a sorry sight too. We play our politicians well to encourage them to do a good job and be less prone to corruption.
Ask yourselves, if the job does not pay well would you be motivating yourself to work hard to be a politician? Just because the source of revenue for the government comes out of your pockets, you are feeling sore about their hefty pay-packets. Why not complain that private corporations are raking in bonuses by the millions? Yes by comparison our country's politicians do earn several times compared to other countries but every country's political system differs. How much do you hear of corruption in Singapore as compared to overseas? Look at Chen Shui Bian or even those nominated to take posts in the Obama administration's treasury. Several of them fail to make the mark due to questionable tax histories and such.
Our labour pool is rather small and attracting talents to join the government is no easy task. Ask yourself, if the pay of a politician is $400k (the equivalent of Obama's) whilst as a doctor you can rake in $600k. What would your choice be? Our pay has to be competitive compared to what other alternatives these people who choose to be politicians have. Dont be hypocritical when you say the politicians are greedy. Dont you wish you could have a bigger house, drive a bigger car or earn a larger wage? Arent these traits of greed? Greed and selfishness is everywhere a human phenomena, an innate nature in fact. Father of economics Adam Smith recognized this as a fundamental driving force behind the market system. By the pursuit of self-interest people promote an end (benefit to society)which was never part of their intention that makes today's market economies possible. To scorn justified pay packets is to condemn the market system and meritocracy. Ask yourself would you rather a system whereby your hard work does not merit an equivalent portion of monetary reward.
