Strategic And National Interest Could Be The Basis For Future Ties, Says Syed Hamid
PUTRAJAYA, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said ties between Malaysia and Singapore could be based on strategic and national interest in future, no more on the concept of being neighbourly.
This is because of both countries regard bilateral ties differently with Malaysia being neighbourly while Singapore cares only about its economy, he said.
"I think if we look at the foreign policy of a country, the core of its policy is its strategic and national interest," he told reporters after attending a Hari Raya get-together organised by Malaysian Youth Foundation, here Monday night.
He said the strain in relations between Malaysia and Singapore would remain if Singapore is very aloof with its foreign policy.
To a question, Syed Hamid said: "This is not the question of compromise...Singapore has two choices. If it refuses to compromise...go to war." But war, he said, is not the solution in resolving problems between two countries.
"The approach in knowing what is ours and not to give in without knowing what is ours," he said, adding that the time had come for Malaysia to think business like to benefit from its ties with other countries.

Syed hamid is twisting his word that he has memtioned in the above report which i got.he told reporter today that he Did not mention the word WAR.haha..stupid foreign minster trying to act smart again! -
With a Foreign Minister like Syed Hamid Albar, it is little to wonder that Malaysia has problems with all the neighbors around her.
Look towards the last paragraph, in which he claimed that:
"The approach in knowing what is ours and not to give in without knowing what is ours,"
The brilliance of a man who will "NOT give in WITHOUT knowing what is ours".
What is there to give when one does not even know what belongs to oneself ?
No wonder Malaysia claims everything first, without knowing what belongs to them.

come to think of it, it is not a bad idea to have syed hamid as a FM. just consider this, foreign observers are looking and listening to what the msian govt have said and done. the constant backtracking and shifting of position will not go unnoticed. what the msian cabinet ministers are doing are detrimental to the well being of the state in the long run since what they do will reflect on them. to me, i really hope that msia will continue to have these people like syed hamid at the helm. so despite all the wayang and the nonsense, as long as he and his sidekick are around, things only look bright for our future in the long run

Syed Hamid Albar made a BIG public Booboo this time. . . he was the FIRST to mention 'go to war' and now he said he did not mention 'war' when in the first place, even the other media sources also happily went around quoting what he said when he first spoke of war. . .I'm not sure how he will explain himself this time round. . . will be interesting to see his response.. .

I tell you ar, Singapore must present all their arguments in a multimedia package that is so comprehensive and user friendly that it CANNOT be denied (but then again, they are Malaysian politicans you know). If he said he never mentioned war, we'll video tape his denial, and play it beside another video of him mentioning that war statement. See what he do...
He'll probably accuse Singapore of being disrespectful and trying to tarnish his image. Irregardless of how compelling the evidence, as we can see.
Of course, has a Malaysian ever even stopped to consider that despite the supposed "disrespect", that the allegations are true?
One can only hope we dun have to come to a point where the only was to make them see reason is via 155mm FH-2000 shells... -
all forumers who have been following the news lately should noticed that the msian response to the spore arguments appeared rather weak. they seems to lost their focus and balance in their case......... the are now responding without any directions nor focus....... just opening their big gap for the sake of a response........ this is expected if you have no concrete grounds for your case.....
anyway, the govt should refrain from responding to any msian response unless there is something new.... those are stupid allegations.... we should not dignify their stupidity with a response... -

They will probably deny the video, and say that it is movie tricks with "Computer Technology" made out by either Media Corp or the Ministry of Information and Arts. -
maybe someone out there should really complie the news reports and TV cilppings on what he said........ should he backtrack and deny such reports.... we can always go to the msian high comm and handover a protest note with the CD......... obviously this person did not receive much moral education when young...... didn't his dad told him that honesty is the best policy........one wonders how a spineless and person that lacks honesty and integrity can rise up to be a minister........man....this is cronyism at its worst...

i've never failed to be both amused and disgusted at the recent M'sian response to the water and island issue...
its just a series of outright denials, claim to be misquoted, mud-slinging to Sg and untenable claims that they can nullify an international agreement with a domestic law!

he is calling bluff....... the chances that they will enact such a law though exists, but they must consider the ramifications seriously..... i really hope that they will enact such a law...... the msian govt will really look good on the international arena.....what is the point of making more out of the water price when the ramifications are decrease in investors confidence and a downgrade of the soverign risk.... do it...i dare them.

a gov't usually does not resort to this because (a) it serously damages their credibility (b) it does not suit their interest as much as they would like to think that it does...
lets have an example: say there's not enough water... they're dying of thirst and we keep drawing the water we're ENTITLED to from their rivers...
now, under such extreme circumstances, if M'sia enacts a domestic law stating that ALL waters must be allocated for domestic use and ONLY surplus can be sold to a 3rd country, it would be justified.
Sg would not like it, but it must grudgingly agree since we cannot reasonably expect to have water to drink at the expense of other people's thirst.
BUT Sg would also be fully justified to seek compensation for the breach of this treaty as well. and lets not forget that its guaranteed by the separation agreement (i've read it... its really there) ... so it would have wider ramifications as well.
now, lets not get carried away. as Jayakumar said, its not how much, but HOW.
so to me, our sovereignty is only breached if we allow them to change the terms because they have the clear intention to undermine it. this seems to be the case.
if, like i said, they face an existential water crisis, would anyone here be so egotistical and selfish and still stick to the letter of the agreement? -

1) Brunei has no business with Malaysia. They are with Allah BUT they have more sense.
2) Indonesia has enough businesses at home. Though not having enough sense, creating riots and strikes against causing social and political instabilities at their home, which in turn causing their ever down spiralling economy etc... They need their troops to control their people, some how, and fight the terrorists. A weak economy disallows they for a war. Though they can spiritually support Malaysia... Conclusion, they have ENOUGH businesses.
3) Phillipines is mainly Catholics and they need to fight their own terrorists' groups. They have no business with Malaysia.
3) Thialand is mainly Buddhists and they need to fight their own rebel and terrorists' groups. Buddhism some more encouraged peace. They have no business with Malaysia. Their economy is still not strong enough for a war.
4) Malaysia. All talk, no do. If they have enough sense, they will not start war like Americans. So does Singapore. I don't think they'll start a bloody war for one stone at the sea (unless they're dumb), so do we. The problem with Malaysia is that they don't fight like a gentleman, with truth and grace ("I did not say war, I LIE!"). I still respect Malaysia enough, still, in turn, they should return respect, like a gentleman.
