    • Transport fare hikes debated

FRISBEES flew in the park, and martial arts exponents raised their arms. Nearby, words flew from the speakers' mouths, their arms raised occasionally.

The hot-button issue on Saturday at the Speakers' Corner in Hong Lim Park was the public transport fare hike announced last Friday.

Some 150 people turned up to hear six people - including former Workers' Party (WP) candidate Dr James Gomez - delve into the issue.

The protest, organised by socio-political blog The Online Citizen (TOC), was the second there since rules on public demonstrations were relaxed on Sept 1.

National University of Singapore (NUS) law undergraduate Choo Zheng Xi, the chief editor of TOC's website, spoke first. He called the transport fare hikes a 'recurring nightmare'.

Dr Gomez argued that the transport woes were exacerbated by the the 'large volume of people brought into the country'.

Financial analyst and local blogger Leong Sze Hian said the 'transfer' rebate cost would be borne by commuters making direct journeys. He said: 'Who are the ones who take direct services? The poor!'

Earlier in the week, the TOC had released to the media a 10-page report, with recommendations to improve the transport system. On Saturday, 50 copies were given out. Many in the crowd were professionals and university students.

You are just another kiasu dog trying to sell propaganda.... why should this happen in Singapore? If the despots start begining to be too much and sets out to destroy Singapore for the sake of their cronies... indeed, I want this to happen in Singapore.

You mean when the despots start killing your relatives for their own bebefit, you don't want that to happen? You will let you own children die and continue to support the despots?

    • The government is out to destroy Singapore...? Right...

Anyway, what are the chances that a peaceful protest turns violent in Singapore...? Its actually very slim... but the chance is still there...

We are not a big country like Thailand China or USA... we cannot afford a riot...

People who support protest have never done crowd control b4... I dare you to do crowd control during the New Year celebration and see how hard it is... At that is just a happy going crowd, imagine New Year celebration crowd all rioting... then imagine your kid got stuck in the middle of it... Imagine your shop is in the middle of their path... Imagine how hard is it going to be to attract MNCs once that happens... I gurantee, 1 major riot = end of Singapore...

You think despots will tell you when they do things for their benefit but will harm Singapore? Or do you think that as a dog of the despots, you will get a cut?

"1 major riot = end of Singapore"? ... and you are still living in this despot run, fragile dot?

"1 major riot = end of Singapore" my ass... the despots will have to stop taking money from Singaporeans and stop putting massive amounts of public money onto their own pockets or under their own control, more like it.

Wow, if true, this shows how weak and unstable Singapore really is.

The more we should topple the PAP regime and build a stronger stable state and society.

If 1 major riot = end of Singapore, I will have to join it.

This shows how unfaithful you are to the peace and stability of Singapore... you are willing to uproot and maybe destroy the lives of 4 million people just to prove a point...

I don't believe a "major" riot will destroy lives of 4 million people.

      Do you?

    • well, with almost all the male population being military trained, it is easy to see how dangerous it is if singapore goes to civil war. not talking about amateurs, but commandos with the skill and know how to do damage.

But in retrospect, a major riot might be scary, but singapore should be able to survive it. we are stronger than that. but it will be devastating to the economy, so if can settle without turning violent, that is the best.

    • but it will be devastating to the economy,

If economy suffers a bit but there are progressive reforms, why not?

State is not all about economy, don't be brainwashed by PAP propaganda.

That is the only card they can play.

    • Worst case scenerio... yes...a major riot like the 1992 LA riot can spread out through the entire of Singapore from Boon Lay to Changi... remember, we only have less than 30,000 Police officers in Singapore and only a fraction of them are under SOC trying to control what possibly 100,000 maybe 500,000 rioters... Damages can go up to tenths of billions... faith in Singapore security system shaken among the MNCs...

These has happend to cities b4 but because they are a big country, one city on riot can be repaired by the other cities the country have... but we only have one city... that's it, nothing more... you gamble with it and its lost...

Maybe I've over exageratted that it will cause the end of Singapore... but can you imagine the amount of suffering the riot and post riot going to bring to Singapore...?

      I can't.

I think that is PAP propaganda.

indeed, state is not about economy. it is not all about politics too. if the reward outweigh the cons, i am sure there will be riots. but if you go to riot and set yourself back economically, but is unsure if the reforms will be for the better, it is not a wise choice to make.

    • Well look at it this way, as a parent you don't your kids to hurt themselves.

So from the moment they are born, you just keep them in a glass box, not wanting them to learn to walk, run and play because you are afriad they will fall down and hurt themselves.

      Great idea right? icon_lol.gif

According to Lee Kuan Yew, yes.

Brainwashed people follow PAP dictates is a good idea.
