    • Guys forget about million dollar aircrafts and fanciful equipment....Just have a small group of trained and lethal snipers can cause havoc to the entire enemy's army.....
The Malaysian soldiers are trained to react to their officer's command....Just eliminate these jokers and you will have snakes without head........................!

    • Yes… the impact of well hidden snipers is extremely demoralising to the troops. But that has never been a well-published topic. Perhaps the SAF wishes to keep such a capability under suitable cover?

    • Yeah snipers are good but they are not invincible. No Army will have all fighter jet or all tanks....it has to have many different different troops with different speciality to get the job done.

Yeah, Snipers are good but they are hard to train. Few met the requirements. Yeah they are the elite but so what, they can make mistakes too. They are also constantly pounded by arty if they fail to extrigate quickly.

Areas where sniper will be not as effective will be built-up areas, aquatic environments, CSS, NBC and many more. Other types of troops will be ideal for these jobs.

Please give credit to normal troops or personnel like many of us, though it may look like anyone can do it, it's usually not as easy as it seems.......cos no one can do it better than us......

Sniper's kills, but who provide the arms and amunition? Who provided intelligence? who gives the after arty support? who manages the comms? Who packed their rations? Go figure....we need each other...or else we would be called an army.

There's once a saying that is told by my NSF CO:
"The greatest glory are those who the unseen, unheard and unsound but yet done!"

yea.....positions in the military like commandos, fighter pilots, snipers, etc are always over-glamourised. i think combat engineers deserve a lot more than they get man.

On the contrary,Snipers are normally forgotten and ignored during peace time...snipers all over the world experienced this.Somehow, commanders tends to forget about snipers during training exercises and worse still doesn't know how to employ them.

I don't thinks Snipers are forgotten. They are so glamourized that books, movies(enemy at the gates), toys figurines (you'll never find figurines of a combat engineer of an armoured vehicle mechanic) and even videogames (silentscope, counterstrike, metalgear,...) are create based on their job....of course many are misconceptions.

Are you a sniper? If your are you won't feel the glamour cos you already are a sniper and your whole platoon's snipers...you won't feel unique.....but to other non-snipers.....you are the main man.

Of course if you're talking about training/exercise and even war, then I agree with you. Many Commander tends to forget about snipers.....that's why sniper must be team independent in the field......that's their speciality.

    • well even though I was in the infantry I find that conventional warfare is rather “wastefull” these days. Well all u got to do is to press a button and a missile goes over. lolz

The whole idea of sniping is to get the guy who gives the command to push the button.

    • Steyr Aug is the rifle. Fires 7.62 match round. 5 round magazine bolt action. Not sure how much it weighs though. Don't like it that much, and like other sniper rifle, it has a floating barrel.

This is not the only sniper rifle we have. I have seen sniper operatives with the Barrett M82. A bloody big weapon with a range of 1800 m. Very heavy at about 14.75 Kg.

Whatever it is, I still like my trusty carbine.

    • Me belong to BRC. That's why got trusty carbine. But I must admit the estab rounds of 5 mag we carried is way too little. Recce must avoid contact, but still in some circumstances, we need more than 5 mag. Anybody from recce and do anyone know the course commander by the callsign "dragon"?

Sorry about the bit on the sniper rifle name, I mixed up the name. I handled sniper rifle before. Nice to fire, but a bit too long for local boys.

    • i've used before the Steyr SSG-69 PI ..i find it suitable for asians in the region due to its design. If u compare it with the american Remington M24 SWS, its even much heavier and long for us to use. I agree that 5 rds is way too little for the standard issued magazine...but its like that..u got to make good use of it..snipers have to be part of a infantry platoon or assault group. working alone in pairs sometimes not effective, if enemy firepower is too strong, the snipers will be dead in a matter of time.. (e.g read the story of the two american snipers in black hawk down..u will noe what i mean). Perhaps our army should get a anti-material sniper rifle. ..will be quite using... add in a thermal scope... will can detect body heat behind walls...quite useful for urban areas like s'pore...the best sniper rifle we have .. the AI L96A1... apparently..the commandos sent their snipers for a competition in USA...they came out first ...among the other europe and asian countries...
