PAP welcomes oppositon to contest in GE.If PAP really means it, then the govt shold take step to make the election process fair to the opposition.
If the election processs is fair, the winning by PAP would be well deserved and much more sweeter.
I suggest the govt suspend the GRC temporary for the next GE and revert to the old way of all single ward constituecies.Suppose the opposition could win several or more than 10 seats,it would be good because there would be more members from the ppl sector instead of the ruling party in the parliament & it would create more jobs because oppostion MP would be likely to be full-time MP.
The govt can change the law so that ministers need not come from elected MP if potential govt office holders lose the election.Govt office holders should be make automatically MP.
Notice
If you want to have fair election (I believe most of you want it),then everyone of you should do your part to tell the govt so .Otherwise, the govt wouldn't know.I have done my part by creating this topic. The rest is up to everybody.

They are trying to fine tune the system until everybody will not be able to vote. Unlike now, where some people still get to vote.
PAP says Singapore not ready for democracy for the next 15 years. The ideal election would be the like the presidential election- The government's "independent panel" decides whether the canidate is eligible.
Its in our interest not to vote for the next 15 years. As the newspapers always tell us - "Dont oppose for the sake of opposing"
Besides PAP sure to win because they have so much election goodies and upgrading.Edited by Calvin86 14 Feb `06, 2:03PM

there is a great need to have at least 5-10 opposition memebers in parliment. i find it hard to believe there is no dirt lurking below the surface of the governments machinery. if the NKF problem existed what else is the there out there that we singaporeans do not know off? we need more check and balances in parliment for sure. wake up singapore!

your math is not good... we need at least 1/3 that is about 25 seats to stop a bill from being passed

How you know they have no clue?
Have they even been given an opportunity to muck up your life?
Give them an opportunity to muck up your life.
Then you will know for sure they have no clue. Oui?

It is about time you Singaporeans said that!
Look at Singapore's history and you will know how to react.... The way presidents were chosen, opposition leaders sued for defamation until bankrupt the list goes on so that they cannot take part in politics anymore... the list goes on and on and on. .. .
The government's "fair election" might not be the same as yours... So why bother asking? You might risk being sued for defamation and stuff..
This is very very interesting.

there is no point in having an opposition in Parliament if he/she is not capable of delivering. In the end, the opposition will get the raw deal, and when it comes to upgrading etc, their wards will still be the last one to be done. We have reached a point where people clamoured for opposition in the Parliament, but are we having it just for the sake of having it? Besides the WP, other opposition parties like the SDA and SDP are not really saying what their manifesto is for the coming election. Obviously, they are not ready, despite claims that they are planning to fight for GRCs, and also for single wards. Do we want such parties to represent us, parties who are waiting till the last minute? I don’t think so.

Abolish GRC…. its the next brilliant idea after the invention of electricity. But there still is more brilliant ideas to come if results are not what they expect. Foundations have already been laid..why so many wards..North, South, East West will do. One-man one vote has already been questioned..a great man has argued that it is not a hallmark of democracy..we just have to accept that all animals are equal but some are more equal than others..better still why not have one stallion vote for this whole herd…

This is very very interesting.Calling for fair election can't get sued.Even PAP says the elections is fair.We should demand for fair election.

The opp. parties are not good enuf, the ruling party can tell the ppl not to vote for them. But the election system should still be fair.

i also feel that elections ought to be fair. it is the cornerstone of democracy. if there are obstacles preventing the alternative voice from being heard, then we risk being controlled by a dictatorship.
fair elections and opposition quality actually goes hand in hand. when elections are fair and more opposition gets voted into parliament, it signals to people that election is not entirely futile and more capable people would come forward to try to win. if a barrier is set up so high, it'll simply discourage people from trying to climb it ... unless one is starving or suffering from severe injustice, one wouldn't risk one's rice bowl for a more equal society, especially when one is capable and successful and thus more equal ...
the rationale for a six-member GRC is bullshit. we can have minority representation without the GRC. how? simply by assigning certain wards to minority contests and other wards to majority contests. would the incumbents accept this alternative minority representation scheme? no because the ultimate aim of the GRC is not minority representation.
