australia is blessed with
1)coal for electricity and for melting iron
2)iron ore for making iron
3)titanium for making aircraft steel
4)lithium fields for making handphone batteries
5)gold mines for making gold
6)vast lands for planting vegetables and producing pork, beef and mutton.
singapore hasnt any natural resources nor good leaders but like hong kong, taiwan, china, thailand, malaysia they have all progressed to same level or ahead of australia without much natural resources..
so its really the people and the minerals found on that land that determines the future of the country.gov can be overthrown be it thru elections or coup by its people.so if people are weak...............u can complain until year 2050 also nothing will change in spore.singapore in 2050 will still be more or less like singapore in 2010.

Despite a population of 20 million and over, australia still remains resilient despite global economic shocks in 2008/09. Singapore despite having higher GDP Growth than Australia, is in the doldrums now in terms of true national progression..
A truly national taxation system which trickles down to the mases
Central banking powers – vested first with the Commonwealth Bank, then the Reserve Bank.
The development of social welfare and health systems.
Minimum WagesThe cultivation of morality and compassion based attitudes
The expansion of higher Knowledge based education and the development of world class research institutions and business enterprisesAustralia excelled in what singapore didnt, despite having similar socio economic conditions
Indeed, much can be said of the nation that maximise strength by affording fellow Australians fairness.
Strength comes by giving every Australian a fair opportunity to work and live
Strength comes by giving a great education to every child, including those whose family and personal circumstances mean they need that great education the most.Again Singapore failed to achieve the above due to its farce meritocratic policies which sidelines the weak and economically underprivileged
Indeed Australian policy makers have not abandon the aspirations and the life-chances of hundreds of thousands of Australians to the short term vagaries of the labour market unlike Singapore's.This done by carefully calibrating immigration into Australia
If we as a nation adopt Australia's the values of courage, flexibility resilience and compassion, I am confident that we can emerge from crisis stronger, fairer and more optimistic than ever.

The foreigners working in singapore remit money back to their own countries, and its their own countries which earn from the economy of singapore. While they use Singapore's money to grow and prosper, eventually at some point of time, they will rise to challenge singapore itself. Will singapore survive or go down in the FACE OF ANNIHILATION?

just want to chime in that the swiss with their direct referendums have taken consultativeness to a new standard and have no need for meddling with politics. http://direct-democracy.geschichte-schweiz.ch/switzerlands-system-referendums.html
however we can be sure that sort of thing sure won't be adopted here... don't malign the swiss hor...Edited by googs 02 Sep `10, 10:47PM

So far, the People’s Action Party’s tactic is to put all the scholars into the civil service because it believes the way to retain political power forever is to have a monopoly on talent. But in my view, that’s a very short term view.
After I had just taken over as the Housing Board’s chairman in 2000, an astute academic asked me: ‘Tong Dow, what’s your greatest problem at HDB?’ Then he diagnosed it himself: ‘Initially, you gave peanuts to monkeys so they would dance to your tune. Now you’ve given them so much by way of peanuts that the monkey has become a gorilla and you have to dance to its tune. That’s your greatest problem.’
We should just concentrate on helping the poorest 5 to 10 per cent of the population, instead of handing out a general largesse. Forget about asset enhancement, Singapore shares and utility rebates. You’re dancing to the tune of the gorilla. I don’t understand the urgency of raising the Goods and Services Tax. Why tax the lower-income, then return it to them in an aid package? It demeans human dignity and creates a growing supplicant class who habitually hold out their palms.
it's nothing surprising. I mean, if you give e scholars so much attention, pampered for e belief they're only e very best... soon it'll become as if no one is above them when there is (practical ppl).

You see the punishment decide it is a cruel and inhuman punishment.
But for the offender, life in a small cell is a cruel and inhuman punishment, and death is great. Actually beheading by chopping off at one chop is the best. Chop, and the fellow suddenly feel light headed, and absolutely no pain. The head is known to say "ahhh!" and smile in relief.

You are quite right, this topic is too difficult for me.
But I must try to understand you. At my own risk. The balcony specially for drying clothes, should have upgraded bamboo holders, in side the balcony, or outside the balcony?
If inside, a lot of money spent, the clothes still won't get sunlight. If outside, after spend a lot of money, go back to square one.
This topic has become mind boggling. Only those from the Institute of Mental Health can see the brilliantness of the idea.

Media broadcasters and newspapers are just tools of the ruling party.
Look no further for evidence. The high level condolences to the passing of a senior broadcaster says it all.
The ndp/rally compulsive coverage show the extend of their grip of the media. In fact, they have no business in the media wat.
It is precisely because the political media is part of the party structure, which is why senior media people have access to highest echelon of the ruling party, usually in one-party states like China, NKorea, Vietnam etc
Off course it happened right here in Singapura.
As a prospective voter & layman, really hope the electoral process will bring about change in the media.

it's no longer a place of transit, it's a home...fail or success would affect us
