Hmm... too bad I can't reproduce it now.
Anyway, I never enter in my real username and password.
I entered in test for both fields. Haha

Are you able to tell whether it is a genuine browser prompt, or like what Tamago has suggested, a Java applet or some HTML DIVs emulating it?

No Java applets. I don't have Java installed. But if JavaScript... I'm quite sure it is JavaScript.
When I was about to submit reply, I click on the Visual button, to switch between code view and WYSIWYG view. Either way triggers that authentication box.
After being re-directed to the main page, I can no longer simulate it.
It shouldn't be a geninue browser prompt... regardless of what the box says. I don't think it's really sgforums.com that's causing the authentication prompt box.
That kind of prompt box looks like it's caused by JavaScripts.
Something like this one - http://hackerskills.com/null.htm (this is a game, password is l3l)
just click cancel and u can post like normal.
Nope, I can't post anything. I need to re-post. Waste my time re-writing.
